I'm going to NYC with my mom and my sister and I can't think of anything to suggest to them to do while I am off seeing Three Days of Rain. I know my sister will want to spend a fair amount of time buying **** in Chinatown and my mom wants to "go to Central Park" (seriously that's as specific as she gets.) I also want to spend time to myself visiting people so they might have several hours without my navigation skills and my mom has already flipped out when I tried explaining to her how we're going to get from Grand Central to Washington Heights using the subway system.
Therefore, if anyone has any suggestions that wouldn't involve tons of train switching I'm all ears!
walk.
you get a lot of exercise that way. plus: window shop on the way.
kills two birds with one stone.
(just wear good shoes)
Uhh, I don't know. When I was younger I used to go in to see museums, and the empire state building..things like that. Theres also a lot of stores to shop at and they have to have NYC pizza, it's the best.

"they have to have NYC pizza, it's the best."
hehe, that reminded me of The Office, when Steve Carell is in NYC, and boasts about his favorite authentic NYC Pizzeria, and then goes into Sbarro. lol
Haha Dre yesterday my mom said, "will we have to walk a lot? I haven't found comfortable shoes yet." ........yeah. I tried explaining that since it's so busy with people and things to look at you don't notice all the walking.
shopping and pizza, how American lol.
Yeah I think I should stop trying to please everyone and let them figure it out.

Hee. Only on this board would that question be asked. Okay, now I'm thinking back to my childhood tourism and field trip experiences. Hmm.
Some good choices include the obvious museums- The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Natural History, and MOMA are all great, if that's your thing. Walking around Chinatown is fun. Same goes for the Village. If it were warmer, I'd say the Bronx Zoo and Botanical Gardens, but as things stand...meh. You can walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, take the Circle Line tour, go to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Central Park...but those are all a bit weather-dependent, too. Maybe the Intrepid?
Oo, if they like Sex and the City, they can take that tour that goes around the city showing you all the places shown on the TV Show.
nice! i would love to do that!
yeah, i hated going to all the museums. I mean, I guess it was good and all, but very boring. Times Square os my area and....now when i go in, i don;t go anywhere else.

I second pretty much everything Plum already mentioned.
In addition, I'd highly recommend going to a Yankee game (even if you're not a rabid fan of baseball or the Yankees). The history within that stadium and the experience itself is worth the high ticket costs. I don't know when you're going, but the season starts relatively soon.
Walking tours are also fun, especially the ones more specialized to your interests. Obviously, your experience depends on the quality of the tour guide.

I would go on the cirlce line tour bus too.. I think that's just something I'd want to do if I were a tourist. I'm a little sad that I've never been on it.
There is so much to do in NYC.

Some great things to do:
Take a grayline tour.
Have Dim Sum in Chinatown.(Hop Kee, Wo Hop, Peking Duck House)
For Pizza: I recommend John's in Times Square.
Museums: The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Museum of Modern Art
The Whitney
The Museum of Natural History
The Museum of Sex
Enjoy.
Well I like museums too hahaha I don't want to send them off to things I'd like to do as well. I think I will allow them to venture through Chinatown and Greenwich Village without me because I don't care about Chinatown and I've spent lots of time in Greenwich and SoHo. I REALLY want to explore the East Village this time around though.
The Museum of Sex! I'll send them there!
Chinatown is a must.
And Little Italy.

Yes, Yankees! How could I forget? Bleacher seats are cheap by Broadway standards- $12 this year, I think. And it's just good, boisterous fun. Shea, on the other hand, is most kindly described as "unpleasant." Both stadiums are lacking in amenities by modern standards, but the one in the Bronx is a lot prettier and more pleasant. Also, the home team is better.
Also, I didn't quite get it through my skull that the trip isn't right now. So the weather-dependent things will be lovely by the time you come, hopefully.

The Jacks and the GSA are mandatory!
Chinatown and Little Italy absolutey. I would say a bus tour if your mom isn't comfortable finding her way around.
NBC has a studio tour which some people seem to like, they can also go to the observation deck at 30 Rock that recently opened. Yet another great arial view of the city.
I hate to say it but when my mom came to NYC for a visit she actually wanted to go stand outside the Today Show and wave to the people back home!
the long island ferry. it would kill an hour, and it's free.

SNAFU - Ditto the NBC studio tour. I sent some family members to it once, and they really enjoyed it. Especially seeing the SNL teeny tiny studio.
Also, Letterman is good, if they like Dave.
There's also the NYCBallet and ABT - see what the perfornance schedule is. Although, I imagine if they are not into seeing shows, they probably aren't interested in seeing a ballet either!
Good luck! There is PLENTY to do in NYC, even if they just walk around and decide what they are in the mood for once they get there.

Does Kenny Kramer still do the "Kramer Reality Bus Tour"?
They should definitely take the train down to near Ground Zero, look at Old St Paul's Church, then walk East on Fulton street to the South Street Seaport.
There's nothing but Broadway in the greatest city in the world. Strange but true.
Find out where Matt Cavenaugh is having a drink after his show and put an end to the rumors that he might really be gay.
