2025 Tony Awards Reactions Thread — Page 21

The most frustrating thing about the Maybe Happy Endingsweep was the lack of recognition for Helen J. Shen. The nominating committee could remember James Monroe Iglehart, but couldn’t give Shen a nomination? She will certainly be nominated in the future, but she deserved the recognition this season."

I wish the nominating committee had found a way to nominate Helen J. Shen because she’s a big part of that show’s success - and her role isn’t as easy as she made it look. But as that didn’t happen, last night went rather well for her. Shen sounded and looked as wonderful as ever in the Maybe Happy Ending performance, she got a shoutout from her Tony-winning co-star during his speech, her show swept every other major category, and she’s an above-the-title star in this year’s Best Musical.

Not bad for a Broadway debut.

Amazing how people continue to peddle this crap that had been put to bed months ago"

But it hasn’t been put to bed. We also we saw. We saw it multiple times. We know that she is “pro-life”. We know that she supports RFK. We know that she is friends with a serial r^pist. We know these things and people continue to celebrate her."

All I know is she gave one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen, has given us ‘new ways to dream’ and has pushed the boundaries in terms of vocal acting and performance that yes right now in this moment even Audra wasn’t able to compete with even in the greatest of all time role star vehicle. THAT is what is being celebrated. This is the Tony Awards that is celebrating excellence in theatre not anything else.

When will people get a life and stop with this madness."

She certainly gave me some new ways to dream nightmares of self-indulgent bad acting, not unsimilar to Patti Lupone's Mama Rose that I found to be flat and craft-less.

We heard you the first 64 times you trolled us about hating both of these performances.

And both won countless prestigious awards this year.

They both somehow survived your BS, believe it or not! What a concept!

Get over it.

Honey; that is called being catty. Nothing wrong with that. Everyone needs to lighten up.

So we’re at the point where people are making things up and then getting pissy about them?

Congrats to Maybe Happy Ending. Not too shabby for a show that had everyone like, "It's about...what?" when it was first announced.

Producing Two Broadway shows is not a great contribution. There are dozens of Producers who have done more."

Keep digging and soon you'll find Jeremy Jordan in the great Sand Cave.

Do you think the producers of the telecast said "We know you only want to be on the show to stir up trouble. We'll happily let you do that, but the price for doing so is being in two bits with Cynthia Erivo"? Some of the players involved clearly wanted her to be a part of the show.

Nothing you are suggesting is grounded in anything close to reality and I doubt very few others producers (to address your response) have the worldwide recognizability or star power of Oprah.

My husband and I watched from beginning to end and we both agreed it was a very well put together show. One thing that I felt could have been improved were the choices of songs picked to be performed by the casts of the musicals. For many of these shows, this is the only chance they have to give the TV audience a feel for what their show is about. If the right song is performed, it could make people want to see the show and especially if they will be in NYC visiting. I think MHE, BVSC, OMM and Pirates chose well. Dead Outlaw and Floyd Collins in my opinion, did not.

I find that sometimes a full day or two needs to pass before the recorded show appears and am hoping that is the case here with Pluto.

Woah, I was not expecting such a jump. But I think there were a number of things working in favor for that this year: Erivo and the Wicked wave, a number of shows having big success on social media (it may not reliably translate to ticket sales, but going from TikTok to watching the Tonys makes sense to me), Hamilton’s reunion, competitive categories, and a higher profile season overall.

Whoa, I was expecting right around 2.8 - 3 million viewers, even with the HAMILTON reunion.

Game 2 of the NBA Finals was on (between two teams that don’t get a lot of eyes), but so was Yankees vs. Red Sox on Sunday Night Baseball.

It also helps that the Tony ceremony wasn’t on Father’s Day this year.
