Also, when has a Best New Musical Tony winner never gone out on tour? I can't seem to ever recall one. Even winners like The Band's Visit, Fun Home & Contact all toured at least a year.

I don’t know enough about the finances of a small tour and whether it would make any sense. I know it would do very well in a run at a decent-sized San Francisco Bay Area theater (ACT, Berkeley Rep). It wouldn’t fill the place at the larger touring houses but would do OK with its credentials as a groundbreaking, award-winning musical. I assume the same is true in other liberal, metro cities.
My daughter went to see the show on a post-graduation NYC trip on my recommendation, and she liked it, but it’s not really a typical tourist show from what I know of it. (I haven’t been to New York City since 2019.)

I could be wrong, but I don't believe Passion went out on tour.

And how well have they done? Certain shows appeal to certain audiences. ASL may not have a broad audience. You never know, I know that, but still. Just because previous winners may have gone on tour doesn't mean every single winner will.

Is this the second shortest run of a winner for Best Musical besides ''Passion''?"
Third after Passion and Hallelujah Baby

Yes, for 2.5 years.

Correct. Passion was the last Best Musical winner to not go out on tour.

Good for them though-I looked on Telecharge and the final performance is already sold out!
Not appealing to certain audiences is not the fault of the show, it's the fault of those audiences. You'd think quality should and would appeal to everyone.
Thank you, A Strange Loop.

I wouldn't use the word "fault" as love for art is very subjective. There's no fault of the audience in loving or not loving a musical.

"Let's put this show on tour, because even if it doesn't make money at least it's out there!" Should that be their thought process?

Huh? Lots of shows don't appeal to all audiences. So it has always been and so it shall always be.
Good marketing and producing can sometimes helps shows pull in audience-goers who might have otherwise found a show, its topic, or its style unappealing.
And some topics, stories, or styles—no matter how well done— just don't interest some people at all or at the prices they have to pay for what in their eyes might feel like taking a chance.

This. thank you. It's 100% the show. It's not the audiences fault.

I was lucky enough to see this fantastic show and it opened my eyes to how African american men live. After seeing the show, I realized I had some blind spots. Perhaps the marketing could have been better but I think the show is a little too ahead of it's time for Broadway. Somebody on this thread called the show a Disaster. That statement couldn't be further from the truth.

I think this might have done better to run off-broadway.

I'd like to offer you a gold star for writing one of the most pretentious posts I've ever read on here.
I have no problem with people not liking the show. Just the idea that it was only ever going to have small audiences anyway, too gay, not family friendly. Sweeney Todd is about a serial killer. Is murder family friendly, are that show's audience all killers?

It did and it won the Pulitzer.

In truth, murder is one of the most common elements of American TV shows and many Americans are far more concerned about their kids being exposed to any non-hetero sexuality than about them seeing graphic depictions of violence on a regular basis.

When you have Whoopi Goldberg on 'The View' critiquing the show, and saying 'part of it will make you uncomfortable' and 'it's not for everyone' , you're going to wipe out part of the potential audience who may have taken a chance on it if they came to town. Though she said she liked it, and thought this was a compliment, she should have chosen her words more widely. Not blaming her for this box office failure - but she does have a wide reach for an audience each day, and many will take her words seriously.
And they will spread her review to others who may be heading to NYC with a misrepresentation of what she actually said: "Whoopi said 'Strange Loop' ain't too good. Go see something else while you're in the city. "

Do we know if it sold out or they just pulled them for now and they'll go back up?
Most beautiful show I've ever seen on Broadway. My community felt represented and heard. I've had so many hard, deep, passionate, and heated conversations with NYC gays about this show..which I'm so grateful for.
Well, yeah... that's my point. Being gay is worse than murder. Black? Fat? Forget it. Kinda the point of the show too. Flying green witches, psycho woman-controlling masked phantoms, singing cats... all fine.
