Jesus Christ...I love gay people, I just don't want to hear about the specifics of anal sex.

That's a contradictory statement. As Kad said above implying gay sex is dirty is homophobic. "I love gay people!" is like the "I have a black friend!" argument. It holds no weight. Part of being an ally to the LGBTQ+ community is listening, donating, and supporting their work. It's not wearing an "Ally" shirt you got off Etsy and endlessly insulting a show written by a gay, black man that you didn't even see.

Check your privilege, please.

Although I don’t appreciate the way some people in this thread have spoken/written to me, I nevertheless apologize for the offense I have caused. Clearly emotions are high about the closing of this show and it would have been more respectful of me to have simply not said anything.

I’m sorry.

Have a good night, everyone.

Well i will say I am gay AND I have anal sex but I don’t necessarily expect others to want to hear the graphic details of that, especially in the context of which this show describes it. I don’t think it’s homophobic. I might say it reflects a general lack of open mindedness perhaps but as whoopi said the show isn’t for everyone. You don’t win a Pulitzer Prize because you follow the ****ing status quo. You win a Pulitzer Prize because you break ground. That’s the whole point of the show - to try and make you feel uncomfortable while also hopefully entertaining you, making you laugh and making you think. I don’t know why we need to get so offended if people are expressing their sincere reaction to the show when it doesn’t even seem controversial. You are NOT meant to feel comfortable watching Inwood Daddy. That’s the whole point!!!

You're right, you're not supposed to be comfortable watching Inwood Daddy. The reason we went on this tangent is because of the words "I do have to say again though that I think the show's biggest issue was the graphic sex stuff." when discussing why the show didn't perform as well as it could have knowing full well the first turn off of the show is that the marketing was that it was "Fat, Black, Gay". It was that we felt the need to highlight the "graphic sex stuff" that does not actually exist in the show while being happy watch any other myriad of shows through theatres history that uses vulgarity to make their points and many that go on to massive success. People were talking about the role of homophobia in both the audience not accepting the show and specific people in this thread being because it uses a lot of coarse language but has no problem sitting through Sweeney Todd or Hair in all of its vulgarity. They compare it to watching their grandparents having sex. Maybe some introspection would do some people some good instead of just stamping their feet saying "I'M NOT!"

FWIW I didn't care to see this show either. After listening to the off-Broadway recording I felt it too triggering.

Everyone unpacks their baggage in different ways, and maybe for Mr. Jackson writing this show helped him.  But I've had enough of my own baggage & I don't feel the need to take on anyone else's.

I spent most of the 90's at the tubs getting raw dogged by Daddies - sorry no evidence exists because back then we just lived & didn't feel the need to record every minute. I closed out my twenties with the big P-O-Z.   It doesn't make me special.  And it doesn't make Michael R. Jackson special either.

I do acknowledge that there are differences in our lived experiences. But I don't really care to hear all his problems.

I didn't feel the need to spend my money on seeing his show.  I was happy to sit through the Music Man instead.

I hope he made enough $$$ off this to go see a therapist instead of writing another musical.

I'm still smarting over this comment:

But I shared some thoughts as a straight, white, liberal, middle aged theatre lover — the kind of person this show would have needed to attract in order to have a longer run.

Seriously, WTF?!?!?!

I just don't get people clutching their pearls when a really non-commercial show doesn't perform. I'm sure the producers would have hoped that audiences would get on board and interested after the TONY win, but, clearly, they weren't. It was always going to be a tough sell. But, hey, happy it happened. And I can't wait to see it.

And Fun Home was a hit. So, you never know.

Honestly, I am pretty squeamish about certain blood things so it's pretty ironic thatSweeney Toddis my favorite musical. I actually thought the film version was way too graphic - on stage the throat slittings are usually done with little to no blood.

As someone else mentioned though, not wanting to hear about the specifics of gay sex doesn't make one homophobic. Do you want to hear about the specific sexual acts your grandparents do together? No? But you still love them? That's my point.
"

But we've sat through how many seasons of Game of Thrones? Hell, I saw some O'Neil play on Broadway with graphic straight sex. And I can't imagine you've never seen porn....

I know that it is kind of a weird thing for someone to say, but the writer is not naive to this and the show literally jokes about it. The writers know exactly what kind of show this is and make no apologies for it, which is why it's so great. So I don't know why we need to be shocked when people are talking about the show in this way. The writer knows this and has already beat them there.

"How many minutes 'til the end of intermission?
If you can't please the Caucasians
You will never get the dough!"

Saw this tonight. Like others on here, I didn’t much like the cast recording, but on stage it’s another experience entirely, and I loved it. I don’t want to give away the ending, but literally the final second moved me to tears. Jaquel Spivey is wonderful. The whole cast is great, really.

I know right? This dude has a habit of commenting on shows and going in DEPTH on them yet...he doesn't see them. He's doing in in the Almost Famous thread right now. "I don't want this to close but....." yeah right. People who don't see shows shouldn't comment on them like they have. Ever.

Went again last night for the talkback with Trevor Noah and WOW…not only the whole cast was on fire, but Noah probably facilitated one of the most interesting talkbacks I have ever seen in a Broadway theatre.

The man is clearly a fan (he said he’s seen it 4 times) and came last night with an understanding of the assignment and a lot of insightful and thoughtful questions about the actors, characters AND production elements (Raja Feather Kelly was on hand to discuss the choreographic choices). Even having seen the show as many times as I have, I felt like there were questions that got answered that I didn’t even know I had! It was like a drama lecture in the best possible way.

Trevor Noah is awesome, he deserves so much more than a show on Comedy Central. Maybe we'll get him on the Late Late Show once Corden's out the door?

I finally got the chance to see the show and it's a unique presence on Broadway that I feel sad that barely got one year, but I'm also very happy that almost got on year on it.

It's like Michael let us see the world according to him, to a person that we don't get to see how the world works for them, and it's personal, but also funny and beautiful, if not tragic. It's really a masterpiece on its own.

I love some scenes, the monologue to the father is OUTSTANDING and Jaquel is perfect in such a demanding role, I really wished that he got the Tony for that.

One of the best victories of Best Musical of all time.
