I’ve been to Pritzker Pavilion twice and, both times, there were a section of seats (usually the center sections) that were on sale (and, anyone without a ticket couldn’t get into these sections), but the lawn was free. Looks like they just realized they could make money off of the lawn section for this performance. Or, it may be that there is a different contract for the booking of Idina’s concert – not sure how it works for the free concerts, but perhaps it’s a difference of Idina renting the space and not being an official part of their free summer concert series.
My guess is that, because the lawn is on sale and they will clearly have to have heightened security/ushers to make sure anyone on the lawn holds a ticket, there will be less people who will be using the concert as background music for their picnic. And, because everyone on the lawn will have paid for a ticket, it’s likely they will be much more interested in hearing the show than the many that I have experienced just going there for the picnic aspect instead of the performance itself.
Considering they were giving away tickets to her last London concert in a small - mid size west end theatre I'm amazed she is charging £70-£90 in arenas across the UK
The only thing that has changed since then is Frozen and John Travolta saying her name wrong. Seems a bit optimistic but good luck to her
Pootie2 - I was at that Ravinia concert and the Ravinia crowd and the atmosphere itself is very different. Plus, they have ushers patrolling the lawns at all times to monitor noise level, even carrying "QUIET PLEASE" signs.
GilmoreGirlO2 - I have seen those center orchestra seats sold for certain events and everything free for other events. I was just a bit confused by the idea of selling everything for the Pritzker, which will involve a LOT of extra personnel given that the lawn itself was design for free and easy access. The pavilion is integrated into the park and close to the street, so it's not like people can't just walk up nearby and stand and watch without a ticket. It's just really odd and I don't think I've heard of this happening with the Pritzker before (though I could be wrong). I always enjoy seeing Idina in concert, but I may just skip this one.
"What can you expect from a bunch of seitan worshippers?" - Reginald Tresilian
Per the Chicago venue, I expect the close-up seats would be the best in relation to crowd chatter, so the problematic part seems to be outer lawn area that's not clearly demarcated from the park as you describe... I can't imagine they'd close off the park or the adjacent street. Maybe rope things off. I wonder if that was the only venue available at that time or something.
I expect not all the chosen venues will be ideal, but I just hope the awkward ones like this aren't an unmitigated disaster.
Well, maybe something hilarious like this will happen in the outdoor venues (starting around 2:30 mark)... She seems to enjoy the casual chaos.
I'm so happy this thread was bumped - as a hardcore fan, it thrills me to see her career finally take off the way it could have so many times over the years.
Holiday Wishes is actually the #10 album in the country this week! I'm also pretty confident she'll get Record of the Year & Pop Vocal Performance Grammy noms on Friday, and feel like she could win either or both. And her TV appearances just keep rolling.
VIP packages are moving fast, as are regular tickets; I don't foresee an issue selling all the venues well, especially with 7+ months to move the tickets.
Regarding outdoor venues - she's certainly not the first and only artist to perform outdoors in the summer months, so I don't consider those "bad decisions." If someone's a big enough fan to go to the show, they probably won't let the heat keep them away; it would be a minority. And yes, Idina seems to enjoy the outdoor venues. The audience is often a bit rowdier (thanks to BYOB on the lawn and casual atmosphere), and she really plays off energy. I saw her at Ravinia a couple years ago and the thing sold out - yes, even the paid lawn. It was massive - I had reserved seats so I can't speak to the lawn experience; it's not one I would want for an artist I really cared about. I want to see the star!
Anyway all that said - I couldn't be happier for her!!
Menzel even got three spots in the CMA Country Christmas special. Three. Some people complained about that, besides the whole obvious "but she's not country!" part. But I would love to buy the Nettles duet of "Let It Go" somewhere...
Mister Matt, I agree that it’s definitely surprising to see the lawn being sold if only because, as you mentioned, the extra measures they will have to take to make sure that everyone on the lawn has a ticket. It will be interesting to see how they manage that. I was going to opt for the seats instead of the lawn, but the prices are pretty steep and, having seen her a few times in concert, I am going to give the lawn a shot. My guess is that, with the charge to even get onto the lawn, the crowd will be more interested in actually hearing her perform. Here’s hoping!
All of her tremendous success is thrilling and could not be more deserved. As she's quick to mention, she's been around a long while and has certainly endured her fair share of tribulations. I genuinely hope she isn't wearing herself too thin between the Xmas album, the upcoming tour, all of the promotional events, her child, NOT TO MENTION still doing 8 shows/week. Though if anyone can handle it, it's her and it must sure feel nice to have all these opportunities after busting her butt for so long.
"I genuinely hope she isn't wearing herself too thin..."
I suspect Menzel would rather be overbooked and crazy busy this time of year, which has had mostly negative connotations for her (and got worse for obvious reasons). Well, can't fault her for that. I just hope IF/THEN pulls great numbers in the upcoming weeks.
^I just meant in terms of her work ethic. Of course she is susceptible to human ailments like everyone else, but she's got a reputation as a workhorse not to mention, as I said, she's been around so long that I'm sure she knows how to keep up her endurance.
"Perhaps, but we all get older and putting someone on a pedestal just makes them an easier target to knock down."
That's a problem I have with her younger barely-sentient tween fans screaming that she's the queen of perfection or whatever. C'mon. These are the same "fans" who are crushed and livid when Menzel doesn't make it to stage door one night.
