Am I misreading, or are most of the shows closing after missing out on the Tonys shows that people here really like? I mean, there are plenty of shows (hits and flops) that people here will deride, but I'm getting the sense that most people here liked these shows, or elements of them, and the feeling is it's just sort of a shame that they didn't get a boost from the broadcast. If so, that combined with the fierce competititveness for Best Actress in a Musical suggests to me that, aesthtically if not financially, this is an exceptionallly good year for Broadway.

All four at the top of the DeathWatch list (Smash, Boop!, Dead Outlaw, Real Women Have Curves) have loud and vocal supporters. But I don't think the majority is out here saying that any of the four are perfect or beyond critique. Yes, in a different season -- and with different choices by producers in some cases -- any of the four of them could have found a sturdier audience. But they're all flawed or complicated shows that could also have failed at other times. Anyone who says differently has...dubious critical thinking ability.

How many productions of Bad Cinderella have there been? Or Lempicka? (Granted, I don't know if either of them are even yet available - they just happen to be two big flops that jumped into my head.)"
Just one example for you. There are countless others:
Working was a gigantic flop on Broadway. It played 12 previews and 24 performances in 1978 before it closed on Broadway at a complete loss. Since then, it has received amateur and professional productions all around globe, has practically been performed at every high school in America and has earned the rights holders hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars. I don’t know too many people who consider Working a flop at this point.

Yes. Producers can't be going in banking on the idea that they'll make back their money on the road or in licensing. Shows like Legally Blonde, Seussical and Addams Family are exceptions because they are big tent IP titles (ahem, Smash is NOT). A lot of flops on Broadway don't go on first class tours (or struggle if they do) and aren't huge plays in licensing. The bigger success you are on Broadway, the better your chances for a long life after Broadway. How often are we seeing shows like Honeymoon in Vegas, Rocky, Bullets Over Broadway (another Stro flop...), Amazing Grace, First Date, etc - just to name a few from around a decade ago.

First Date actually has been done somewhat over the years due to its relatively small cast, easy stagging and small band

Agreed! 👍🏼
Is BOOP seeing a surge in ticket sales? They were soldout Tuesday night and have upped their lottery tickets from $40 to $55.

Looking at Telecharge, tonight is looking really encouraging ticket sales wise. Obviously we can't predict if the sold out trend will continue but maybe Smash audiences will migrate over to BOOP

I think Smash may have done Boop a massive favor here.
Editing to add: after looking at the upcoming seven days on Telecharge, Boop’s days are probably numbered as well.
Maybe (delusional) people who expected the lead to swoop in and snag the Tony out from under Nicole or Audra bought tickets ahead of time for Tuesday's performance thinking they would get to see her give some teary eyed speech. Only the really delu-lu types hold any hope that this is going to stick around.

I don't think I saw anyone who predicted that the lead would swoop in and pull an upset, but it's possible, I guess

Unfortunately, looking ahead at the next few weekends for BOOP, there's no way this is still open for July 4th week.

Ha! No where did that happen. 'Hoping' is not the same as 'expecting' but you knew that. Good try, though.
Quite a few people on this board floated the idea that "vote splitting" would occur that would result in Jasmine winning Best Actress.

Yes they did but they didn't expect it to happen. Throwing the idea out isn't the same.
