Channeling, but not embodying."
….its a revue and the song is done completely out of context from the original material. She quickly pivots from the heartbreak of “Loving You” to the grit of “Roses” to the dark comedy of “Worst Pies” all within a two hour running time.
So, yes, channeling. Not “embodying”. And there’s nothing wrong with that in a revue.
You Audra Gypsy stans are too damn much.

Well, I do. Saw Montego last night. Mostly full house.
She was brilliant. I've also seen Audra, as well as every other Broadway Rose since Tyne.
Glover has the voice to belt the entire show, but wisely held her vocal cards a bit closer to her chest in the first act. ECUR was the first real taste of what she could do when really letting go. It was brilliant.
Her Rose's Turn was epic. Not as blisteringly sad as what Audra is doing, but very much her own version and she absolutely crushes the vocal. It's strong, angry and pointed.
Glover's performance easily finds the comedy and there's a natural ease with how she interacts with Danny. The streaks of anger and 'it should be me up there' are evident throughout and wonderfully uncomfortable.
The negativity on this thread from some people who will never see this performance feelson-brand.

This is exactly what I would have expect/hoped- previous reports of her not belting much have been baffling since I saw/heard her in Memphis hundreds of times (I worked there) and she is the very definition of a “beltress”.
FYI, an update on mid-summer availability: all of next week's performances - thru Saturday 7/12 - with McDonald back are on TDF.

They clearly mean people offering their bul*hit opinions who did not see her perform is pretty typical here. Simply put: If you did not see Montego perform or just "listened to audio", you can't judge her performance in any kind of real way. Opinions are completely irrelevant for people assuming things about her or saw her in the past. Feel free to review it after you see her perform tho. Audra was supposed to return next Tuesday but it changed a few days ago and she will return Wednesday afternoon.

How is it “clear” they’re referring to people who hadn’t seen Montego when literally every post commenting on her performance (prior to BenjaminNicholas2’s) is very clearly coming from someone who SAW it…?
Every post critiquing her performance on the first few pages is from someone saying they saw it firsthand.
Not liking something does not mean you’re negative. It’s called having an opinion.
Your argument makes zero sense, as usual.

I agree with you. But funny how you forget your own comments and behavior from other threads.

Reading is HARD. But, Benjamin said "The negativity on this thread from some people who will never see this performance feels on-brand." So, pretty crystal clear to me and any semi-intelligent person who can read English. Your argument is nonexistent, but I won't say as usual since Ive literally never paid attention to anything you have ever typed here.

I have never offered my view regarding shows I have not seen because why would I offer my opinion on a show I did not sit through? I wouldn't. I would ask questions but that's about it.
Anyways, seeing this again tonight and I can't wait to see how much she has blossomed over the last week!

Reading very clearly MUST be hard, because abcd made a logical, sound point that your reply didn’t even respond to.

Uhh..question from the back… how can you “ literally” never have paid attention to a post from the person you are literally responding to?? That’s literallly one of the stupidest things you’ve ever posted (and that’s saying a lot - literally.
This thread is kind of dumb. She's subbing for a star on vacation. No one expected her to be Ethel Merman.

She couldn't channel Merman if her bland voice depended on it.

I guess the kindness everyone wants extended to Montego doesn’t apply to other performers.
And to throw my hat in the ring, Lea was sensational when I saw the show too. Not a trace of “Disney princess” or “bland.”
With all the talk about them not papering the house, they must have listened because tonight was COMPED. You know how you can just tell a heavily papered house to a regular one? But I’m glad they did because yesterday, Telecharge showed almost no seats sold and tonight looked pretty full.
I’ll start with the positive. One of my favorite things about this production has always been Jordan Tyson’s June and tonight just made me so happy. She’s not even giving close to the performance she’d been giving before, now. She’s playing it absolutely unhinged in the best possible way. It’s pure camp and not in a way that seems at all wrong, it’s just hilarious and a joy to watch.
Okay, Montego. So there’s a few issues here. The first is the hindrance to a production so TIGHTLY tailored for one specific person (Audra). It gives her absolutely no room to do anything that might be better for her style of acting. Now, that said. The other problem is I just feel she’s completely miscast. She comes across as entirely too young and there’s absolutely no “bite” to her Rose. No force at all. I’ve never seen an actress do so little with that role and I gotta be honest, it was a bit uncomfortable at times.
But it’s a tough role even when you’re not tied down to a (in my opinion) extremely flawed production, to begin with. It just really isn’t the right fit for role/actor, here.
Jordan Catalano said: "She comes across as entirely too young"
That is so striking to me considering she's just 4 years younger than Audra.
I mean, you also got 54 year old Kerry Butler over at NWS right now who could take over for one of the teenagers in “Heathers”. It’s not necessarily a bad thing to look “too young” at 50 years old.

No star power at all. Every time I've seen Gypsy, when Rose is on stage you look at her. Doesn't matter what else is going on, the show revolves around her - that's the part. Yet with Montego on stage, you spent the time looking at everyone else.

some of yall are such assh*les for absolutely no reason.

“a steely Momma Rose doing “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”- NY Magazine
“I wouldn’t immediately peg her for a conniving Mrs. Lovett or pit bull Madam Rose. “The Worst Pies in London” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” are big swings for this actress, but she bats both out of the Friedman. She brassily wails “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”.”- NY Post
“But even more remarkable is Salonga’s Momma Rose with “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” (from “Gypsy” ), displaying a belt and a fierceness that make the number a showstopper.”- Variety
Audra had great reviews too, but when people decimated her performance on here nobody came along and posted her review clippings lmao. What was the point of that? Opinions are opinions.
And I am so aware that this is an unpopular opinion, but I will never see what those critics (or other fans) see in Lea Salonga. She does Kristin Davis on Sex and the City level acting at best, in my opinion. Her performance in Once On This Island not only shouldn't have happened (why was she in that show?), but it was a farce. Just dead behind the eyes and a pretty voice. I went to see Old Friends on the day of her absence and had a fantastic time.
