Yikes. You posted this 4 hours ago and not one response. It sort of goes hand in hand with what the tickets sales look like this week.

I'm hoping to score a rush ticket for this Wednesday

If you’re able, you could just snag one at the box office as you walk into the theatre minutes before showtime. Can’t imagine there’ll be much demand this week.
I was ready to pounce when the rumored guest star was Heather Headley. While I’m sure Montego will do great and be a bit more vocally with how the show is usually sung (no stray operatic riffing), I’m kind of over this production of GYPSY.
Undoubtedly, this is intended to double as a test run for an extension past Audra, but judging by the dismal ticket sales - even with ridiculously lower prices (front side orch for $89) and the rear mezzanine closed off, the show might have been better off going dark for the week.
Headley would have sold more tickets, but wouldn't have sold out a one-week run. Again, the July 4 week/weekend is typically a ghost town for Broadway.
I am going tonight. Rush is only $25. Went pretty late so my seat is partial view, but I am looking forward to revisiting the production.
INTERMISSION
It’s a mini Madame Rose. Glover plays it tight to the chest and you really do miss a big personality in the role. She was a bit shaky at first and Some People was a bit of a mess. Admittedly it was her first number, but those key changes and bouncing between chest and head are really distracting.
And it’s such an uneven production - overacting, under acting, can’t hear understand people - just strange, strange strange. Sure there are other understudies on tonight, but finally, this production is just wearying.
I hope Glover gets bigger. I wish her the best but out of all the singers in New York why can’t we find a belter?

Heather Headley as Rose for one week would've been one of the most talked-about events of the summer. Instead, I don't know anyone at all going to Gypsy this week, let alone even knowing that Audra is out.
Heather prob wanted $$$
Give us Sheryl Lee
Wow, they’re making Glover suffer through those awkward key changes?

Probably easier than rehearsing new keys with everyone. Yikes.
I've been wondering (baselessly!) if this is a soft-launch for Audra dropping down to 6 or 7 a week and Montego taking 1 or 2. It was always a little surprising that Audra forged ahead with 8 a week but I wonder if that's becoming unsustainable given recent absences...I couldn't imagine doing what she does 8x a week.

I always assumed it was a bit of a nightmare for everyone at DOLLY when Donna Murphy had a different set of keys
Let's be honest. The show will certainly wither without Audra's shadow protecting it.
SHOWS OVER
A bit better second act. Not so many forced, changing voices. And her Roses Turn worked better cause, it was a strong last note - not so heady - more belty. She’s still tight in the acting department - a pleasant performance but not very memorable.
what the hell was Joy Woods doing as Gypsy? Strange line readings - under playing mixed with yelling,
Lesli Margherita - still my favorite. And Danny Burstein stands out more with a weaker Rose. A fine job.

Poor Donna.
It was a very mixed-bag for me. Glover left me cold yet (sometimes) slightly engaged. Star quality of her own and a beautiful voice to match. Returning to a production for a different performers characterization is always fascinating to watch. Montego was very grounded and made the dialogue her own but there wasn’t much to it.
Unfortunately, by the end of Act 2 it dawned on me; I would have preferred her to play Louise (in previous years.). I think she is more suited for that role and could have brought nuance to the character. I digress. Aside from opening nerves, she settled nicely into her songs after the initial Some People.
The problem for me: I had absolutely no perspective what kind of person she was portraying. It was rather one note and I'm not sure that was due to opening nerves. I could not tell you (if not for clues from the plot) what her character actually wanted or what she did not want. The dialogue with Louise (after she offers her to the star spot) was her strongest.
What I did get was humor. Lovely lady who was light hearted. Her moment with the audience after ROSES TURN was suddenly sparked. It did not match up with the rest of the number. Vocally lovely but one note and flat.
No doubt she will grow over the next week. I’m a huge fan. If this production had been mounted with Glover from the start, I think they’d be in trouble. Just my opinion.
And that’s ok.
She gave 200% on her first show in what is known as the biggest of all musical theater roles.
Unfortunately, as a once a week alternate, she's not likely a box office equivalent of Donna Murphy, who brought her own considerable fan base in for one night a week. So the idea of plugging her into Tuesday nights or Wednesday matinees seems noble yet not a real solution. But who knows? It might be longer-range profitable to give McDonald another night off with an extension thru Christmas. (Yet - another point about Montenegro - how do you really grow in a role playing it once a week? Murphy began early, did the Midler vacations, and there were two.) I'm an advocate of role-sharing, and remember after the shutdown it was much discussed here after two actors did it successfully in Hadestown. But it hasn't caught on.
Only reason I could see Montego returning again is if Wade has some days off coming up and Montego will fill in as the standby.

Uhhh..."Montenegro"??.....okay? Anyway, GYPSY will be lucky to make it to Labor Day, let alone Christmas. What would be the point of paying an extra "star" salary to Montego (who won't sell a ticket) when they already have a capable understudy who is used to going on 1-2 times a week?

Montenegro is a surname. The poster mistyped or autocorrect made a boo-boo.

Actually, dear, it's a country in the Balkans -- look it up. But sure, it's possible that it's also somebody's surname too.

I never said it wasn't also a country. All the more reason to understand how easily that error could be made.
