Haha not a Broadway publicist! I just honestly had a bad day at work yesterday and then it completely turned my mood around. I think in a show this silly and fun, it didn't bother me that some plot points were out of left field or that there was an abundance of frivolous dance. I was fully entertained. To quote the great [title of show], sometimes you want donuts for dinner.

Fwiw, everyone around me seemed to absolutely be loving it. The applause was massive and I heard all very positive comments around me as we were leaving the theatre.

(Edit - never mind, just realized who I was responding to. The miserableness can't be taken seriously at this point.)

I agree Jordan 100%! It's such a silly, cute and entertaining musical. We had a fun time last night as well! Jerry Mitchell razzle and dazzles us with his creative-magical staging. Jasmine Amy Rogers is truly giving a Star is Born performance and feel she will be nominated for a Tony. She's so charismatic and adorable as Betty Boop. You will fall in love with her performance and be full of happiness at the end.  kiss

Jinkx is getting star billing, but she's likely to be placed in Featured actress after the committee rules.  Pirates is an ensemble show, and they would have to rewrite it very heavily for Ruth to turn into a true lead. She'd be a strong contender for Featured actress (it's the one category that doesn't seem super competitive this year!) and Leading actress is such a crowded field I don't think she'd squeeze in. My guess is we'll see EITHER Kamerloo or Hyde Pierce in Lead and everyone else in featured for Pirates.

JudyDenmark has been here since 2008. You on the other hand 12/16/24 is very suspect. But I think a few of us know who you are already.

This is such an incredibly charming show. Sure, the story is a little thin, but Jasmine Amy Rogers is a star, and every number is a delight. It’s fizzy, frivolous fun, and the design kicks butt. That second act opener is a delight. I hope it finds enough of an audience for a semi-decent run. A pleasure.

I went in to this kinda grumpy and was ready to write it off, but dang, if it didn't just charm the pants off me. Rogers is working her butt off up there and she's 90% of the reason the show works, but it really does work -- like a big ball of cotton candy. Not particularly deep, but it's fun and surprisingly family friendly. If the marketing can get to the right audience, I think this might do okay. I would imagine the reviews will be kind and I wouldn't be surprised if it got several Tony nominations.

Was at the final preview tonight and what JOY! The plot/story has challenges (it certainly wasn’t what held my attention), but the costumes, the choreo, the design, the PERFORMANCES! Jasmine Amy Rogers is a STAR! The entire cast knocks it out of the park with many performances otherwise worth mentioning, but for punctuality’s sake I’ll leave it with my overall recommendation.

Kudos to the actress who stepped in as Carol at intermission, as well as the performer who swung into cover their track. The electricity of the theatre was alive and well tonight.

haters will hate darling! I reserve the right to protect people from investing a huge price for an unsustainable show that will be long forgotten. Yes it is charming and fun at a much more affordable price. Comparably for the high ticket price, there are more innovative and exciting shows. If you have loads of spare cash go see Boop! If money is tight, there are much better shows! And Huss417, can I get some ketchup for my fries!

I went again tonight, and I’ve never been a part of a more electric theater experience in my life. Jasmine is a gift from the theater gods and that whole cast is giving it everything. Going again next week and I doubt it’ll be my last time.

Why are you so obsessed with this show? It's honestly pretty comical.

Saw it last weekend and absolutely loved it. It is so refreshing to seeing a fun show in these dark days. I thought the cast was fantastic and Jasmine is a joy and a delight to watch and hear. I hope this show can survive.

I went a few days ago and while I don't fully get the hype, I smiled a good deal and left happy.

Jasmine Amy Rogers is incredible as people have said, with charisma in spades, spot-on comic timing, and pipes. Her Tony nomination will be well-deserved. But I wish she had more to hang her hat on because I did not get a clear idea of who her Betty is, what she wants, or what she wants to “shout about,” and that's more the book's problem than Rogers'. Her Betty inspires other people to follow their dreams, but what’s her arc, really, and what’s her 11 o’clock number saying about her? Some clear motivation, however simple, would go a long way. There’s not much about the thin characters or plot to hold interest, and there isn't much in the way of stakes to keep you invested. Even if the stakes are silly, give audiences more to feel invested in.

I thought this was at its best when it leaned into zaniness and cartoonishness, so act two actually worked better for me. I started out excited to see the designs because Betty’s world seemed cleverly rendered, using projections wisely, but then the “real world” sets and costumes... Did not like those. Unappealing projections and odd costumes. It’s quite the bizarre vision of New York City (why are people dressed like they’re in La La Land dancing on the Times Square steps? What even is this jazz club? How do they have that view of the city from their brownstone?) and in the first act, the story's not wacky enough for that weirdness to feel right, nor is the design “out there” enough to seem like the design team seized a fun opportunity to to paint a cartoonish “reality” in the real world parts. It took me half the show to warm up to this, since the first act never lifted off for me. I don’t know what it was that flipped the switch, but I was more on board with it in the second act. I never came around to the design, but the “real world” came together better for me in the second act when the show becomes more cartoonish. The reporters? Genuinely funny. Society's general reaction to Betty after act one ends? Sure, why not. The bouncing ball? Really clever! As was the act two opener. I'd want the creatives to think more about why people like cartoons, let loose and get zanier with it when you’ve got cartoon characters from another dimension roaming NYC.

It's a bit all over the place but also: sure, why not, this is all fun. I liked how Stephen DeRosa was dialed up to an 11 most of the time and I got a kick out of Faith Prince, even if she was underused. Ainsley Mendham’s got a wonderful voice that blended great when he sang with Rogers, and the music is tuneful. I don’t remember any particular songs super well outside of Where I Wanna Be, but several got me tapping my toes and I’ll give it a listen when the album comes out. I almost wish they drew out both act finales a bit longer.

I wouldn’t recommend it out of hand to everyone, especially for full price, but if you want a pleasant night out and want to see an up-and-coming star there’ll be something in it for you. And Pudgy’s brilliant.
