I’ve heard from more than one person that they think it could have been better if boiled down to 90 minutes.
I have yet to see this, but curious as to what people here think about that idea? I’m still surprised this production made it to Broadway in general, but as a someone who grew up watching Boop! movies and shorts with my grandmother, this seems a bit unnecessarily bloated.

Simple as that.
Some shows build the cast album into the capitalization of the show, some fund it separately. Every show is different.
A supersmall showmight get away with doing it for as little as $150K. Something like BOOP probably costs double that or more, and when you have a pop writer with deep music industry relationships it can be easier to get an album financed. At the end of the day it'sa nominal investment that they'll probably see a return on over the next 20 yearsbecause of licensing.
A revival is different because the licensing needs are different. And that can make it harder to fund if not part of the capitalization. GYPSY doesn't benefit licensing at all, it's just a recorded document of Audra's performance. (Is an album even in the works??)
Hate to be the debbie downer - but with a weekly nut of over a million bucks, sagging ticket sales, expensive royalties and vague brand appeal, there is no way this show is touring - maybe a radically stripped down version for the Florida snowbirds

Excited to hear this! I particularly liked the orchestrations for "Get Her Back", and am excited to have cast recordings of "Whatever It Takes", "She Knocks Me Out" and "Why Look Around the Corner?""
aside from the history of having a cast album and the shows legacy… I never understand the allocation of money specifically for a show that is struggling and not destined to succeed. Yes, there will be The love specific pieces of the score… But I don’t think this justifies the money for a cast album."
Have you dared consider that the shows producers/investors and a reasonable amount of audience members might simply disagree with you?

Vacuum? I never said my opinion is the only one, it is a chat board. What a waste of a message. I’m going to go out on my Hair cast album - vinyl,

Apparently being a Debbie Downer is your entire personality. So glad you signed on to tell us YET AGAIN why you think this show will fail. I keep revisiting this thread to hear what inane thing you will say next. You never disappoint!

I went tonight and I think this is the first time this season I genuinely left a show simultaneously thinking it was magnificent and also wondering what went wrong. In brief:
The Magnificent:
- JASMINE AMY ROGERS. It’s not hyperbole that she is holding her own space among titans on 44th Street in true triple threat fashion. She was to Boop what Margot Robbie was to the Barbie movie. If there isn’t a locked nomination spot for her at the Tonys, there is no justice.
- The Choreography - Admittedly a little overchoreographed at times. (There was a number toward the end of Act I that could’ve been cut and not missed). But Jerry Mitchell knows how to put on a full blown show and has never met a kick line he didn’t want to make tap. Also, Jon Rua and Rachelle Rak are his associates on this show, so he is clearly not messing around with his dancing
The Wrong:
- The Book: FAR too long and deviating from Betty as the main character. If they shaved off at least two of the unnecessary subplots, then it would run more efficiently as opposed to getting lost in its own whimsy. There are also few plots that could’ve been elaborated on in order to make the show fully circle. I expected better from Bob Martin, but this was far too unwiedly to fully cohere. A 100-minute one act that deleted the Erich Bergen character, or a 2 hour two act that elaborated more on the consequences of Betty leaving her universe (a la the Barbie movie) would’ve been better.
- The score: The opening number is a dizzying and dazzling high, but then it feels like a balloon they are trying to keep from falling to the ground. For every amazingly flashy number, there are 2 or 3 that are painfully generic. I expected better from David Foster
Overall, it’s very far from perfect, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t leave there feeling full of warm fuzzies and grinning like an idiot.

Very good analysis as above, I agree with all but sadly not enough to get it to the finish line in time.

Hi Boop! Fans - any review from this week? I hear the creative team have refused to make changes and feel the show is locked. Even Foster has not really been seen other than going to other shows.

There's literally a review of last night at #135...and they're asking if there are any reviews from this week (at either 136 or 137)? Make it make sense.

One review does not Justify a silly response such as are you tired? Relax darling
There really isn't much of a story to care about. Who is this creature and why? OK, so it's a fantasy, but why? and why should I care? Not splashy and theatrical enough (despite all the glitz and confetti and tepid tap dancing) and just a Hallmark-y rom-com-y tale. Quickly forgotten.
And really who the hell is Betty Boop anyway? Even if you create her as a new character, this one isn't memorable or impactful.

I saw this last night and desperately wanted to love it, but it just isn't it. Jasmine is spectacular, but I fault direction and book here. There's no central story. Boop has like three separate major plots, so the focus is all over the place. Jerry's choreography and tricks feel very recycled from previous shows. Sadly this was a miss for me.

I really liked the book and appreciated the almost vaudevillian comedy. I thought the plot was fairly straightforward for a musical:
Betty Boop comes to the real world and inspires three separate people to follow their dreams (Carol, Dwayne, Trisha). Betty also finds love and the B plot with Grampy and Valentina parallels her love story to warn her and Dwayne of what their lives might look like without each other.
People on this board seemed to dislike the mayor scene (which is only devoted about 5 minutes of the show), but I thought it was funny to parallel a Boop skit with a scene in the real world where she ends up knocking the villain out.

"vaudevillian comedy in 2025? Good plan, will work well against a season of star packed shows. Too bad Boop! does not have a dunk tank and more prat falls
