Simple as that.
Some shows build the cast album into the capitalization of the show, some fund it separately. Every show is different.
A supersmall showmight get away with doing it for as little as $150K. Something like BOOP probably costs double that or more, and when you have a pop writer with deep music industry relationships it can be easier to get an album financed. At the end of the day it'sa nominal investment that they'll probably see a return on over the next 20 yearsbecause of licensing.
A revival is different because the licensing needs are different. And that can make it harder to fund if not part of the capitalization. GYPSY doesn't benefit licensing at all, it's just a recorded document of Audra's performance. (Is an album even in the works??)
Hate to be the debbie downer - but with a weekly nut of over a million bucks, sagging ticket sales, expensive royalties and vague brand appeal, there is no way this show is touring - maybe a radically stripped down version for the Florida snowbirds

Where has that figure came from that "the weekly nut is over a million bucks?"

Jasmine is spectacular, but I fault direction and book here. There's no central story. Boop has like three separatemajor plots, so the focus is all over the place. Jerry's choreography and tricks feel very recycled from previous shows. Sadly this was a miss for me."
I really liked the book and appreciated the almostvaudevillian comedy. Ithought the plotwas fairly straightforward for a musical:
"
Oh my god, are these two bots having a conversation with each other?"
Ugh this is a shame Call_me_jorge. I read your comments history and find I actually mostly agree with you lol

Apparently being a Debbie Downer is your entire personality. So glad you signed on to tell us YET AGAIN why you think this show will fail. I keep revisiting this thread to hear what inanething you will say next. You never disappoint!
"Thanks Pride! Glad to have you following my views and perspective on this show. I do hope it finds an audience and continues to inspire new work.

You do NOT hope it finds an audience. You have started at least two troll hate threads for it and do nothing but trash it. You are being completely disingenuous and you’re not fooling anyone. You will be dancing in the street when this closes.

I don’t think we’ll see many of them… As the opening night is Saturday night not a very good night for an opening night… Many of the other actors and artists will be another shows… So I don’t think it’ll be a hot red carpet

I'm sure Oprah, Celine Dion, Michael Buble snd maybe even Josh Groban will be able to get a Saturday night off if they ask their bosses. Wink
Saw today’s matinee. The show is a tad flawed. The book is a bit over-padded, the set and projections are rather cheap looking, and there are some lulls/pacing issues in both acts. However, all that aside, I thought this was still just absolutely delightful!
Jasmine Amy Rogers is holding her own on the same block where both Audra and Nicole are turning in astounding performances. A true star-making turn if there ever was one. I would honestly welcome a Tony win for her - I thought she was THAT good.
Special shoutout to Ainsley Melham who has an incredible voice and exudes a ton of natural charm and charisma. Faith Prince and Stephen DeRosa are both welcome additions even if their plot is a little silly and extraneous at times.
The choreography is dizzyingly dazzling. The opening tap sequence gave me full body chills. The orchestra sounds full and lush. A lot of shows recently have sounded like they were being mixed through a tin can, so it is such a treat to hear a show sound this good.
While Boop! may not be perfect, I found it impossible not to be won over by the wholesome fun and the truly incredible leading lady.

A very good overview of the show. It is delightful snd flawed. Not enough to win the day. I will now wait for the reviews.

Jasmine is INCREDIBLE and I’d be delighted if she caused an upset and won the Tony. But the show around her is a hot mess. The cheapest looking show I’ve ever seen on Broadway, and a storyline so lazy and basic, I don’t know why they bothered. Jerry Mitchell has to be the tackiest director/choreographer on Broadway. Absolutely zero taste.
What’s Faith Prince doing in this? Why is the actor playing Granps ALWAYS SHOUTING? The young girl is so precocious , she doesn’t stop grinning the whole show. This will get torn apart by critics, but they will rightfully lavish praise on its leading lady. What a career she will have.

Is [it smart and sophisticated? Not particularly. But is it an absolutely charming, wildly entertaining night out? Absolutely.
This is good old-fashioned entertainment done right—light on depth, heavy on fun. From the moment the curtain rises, it’s clear the show isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel. Instead, it delivers exactly what it promises: laughs, energy, catchy tunes, and just enough heart to keep you smiling all the way home.
If you’re looking for groundbreaking themes or existential drama, this isn’t the show for you. But if you’re in the mood to switch off your brain, grab a drink at intermission, and enjoy some truly delightful theatrical flair? This is exactly the kind of show you want.
Yeah, I just enjoyed this so much and have been telling everyone. I can’t wait to go back in a couple weeks and see it again. “Boop” just made me happy and not too many have done that, lately.
What is the physical production like? Is there any spectacle or is the set basically just a big screen? Were any upgrades made for the transfer to Broadway?

Not much to the set. A few moving projection panels make up most of the set. There are a few practical pieces, but I'd say about 75% of the set is projections. I think some of the reason for this might be to allow room for the choreography.
Was curious about the set too. It was pretty minimal in Chicago as well. I was hoping for a spectacle, but was let down with that. But I had a blast at the show.
I think that might be a Jerry Mitchell thing. I mean, Kinky Boots and Pretty Woman had terrible physical productions too.

It’s another classic Rockwell design- cheap and unimaginative. Most of the heavy lifting is done by video and projection. It looks beyond cheap and ugly.
A better designer would have lifted this show considerably, a lot of fun could be had with the black and white/colour worlds.
Also why didn’t Faith Princes costume change at the end? It makes no sense she wears the same thing.

Ive seen Boop! Like the title, I’ve got one word: flop!

Knowing I had a ticket this week, I haven't been reading all the posts here - I will now.
But besides the obvious - Jasmine is amazing - the other thought running through my head was we really need a City Of Angels revival! The b&w/color lighting has gotten so much better and imagine that artistry in a show with good songs!

We saw 8 shows over the last two weeks. Boop was easily in the top three of what we enjoyed the most. (Along with Operation Mincemeat and Maybe Happy Ending) For context, we also saw Buena Vista, Gypsy, DBH, Oh Mary, and Titanique (with Gypsy and Titanique being our least favorites).
I had never seen anything Boop related in my life except her iconic image. The show made me want to learn more about her and her history.
We thought Jasmine was outstanding along with the rest of the cast. Ainsley - what a voice. The choreography, hummable songs and a sweet (though not profound) story made for a great time at the theatre. We loved it so much we saw it twice. It was nice to take a break from the “real world.”
I thought the use of the projections to intertwine the two worlds worked well - it wasn’t anything ground breaking but not as cheap as some will make you believe.
I didn’t love the large role of the sister. Like others have said, I would have loved to see a bit more of Boop and Dwayne’s relationship blossoming.
All in all, I hope Boop gets some love and finds an audience. It is definitely one of the shows we are recommending to many of our friends from all walks of life.

I saw this last night (got a fantastic digital rush ticket 40 min before curtain) and was smiling ear to ear for nearly the entire performance! My jaw dropped during the opening number for act 2 - They’re doing something truly special there. I knew next to nothing about Betty Boop and have come away with wanting to watch her cartoons. Were there issues with the book? Yes. Were the lyrics clunky at times? Yes. But boy was it FUN!!! And Jasmine Amy Rogers is giving a 10/10 performance - firing on all cylinders.
Going to be recommending this one for sure.

That is great. Still no sure it will translate to a hit. Dull book, lazy choreo and forgettable music. Great cast though, but not enough. Sure, it is good at heavily discounted prices

I saw this last night.
I get the most frustrated with shows that I can see the potential in but that don't come anywhere near to living up to it.
There's a very fun Enchanted/Barbie/Splash style story in here. But none of the threads connected.
Betty's world is falling apart with her not there? That would have been interesting to see.
Betty learns about gender inequality? That would have been interesting to see.
Betty gets outed as being a cartoon character in a real world? That would have been interesting to see (and maybe it was mentioned at the end of Act One, but I absolutely didn't catch it). All of a sudden at the top of Act Two, they're all BETTY IS IN NEW YORK OMG!!!
A teenager fixates on a cartoon character as a way to cope with grief and loss only to help the cartoon character find her own sense of self and in doing so finds a sense of purpose. Yes, that all happens, but it could have been the whole story -- and a good one at that!
Betty ends up drawing on the tropes from her cartoons to learn and grow and demonstrate that she's enough. Also kinda happens...but we don't get enough time in Betty's cartoon world to draw the parallels.
My biggest gripe with the show is that its "Real World" wasn't -- real...?
This show has some fun numbers. The cast is doing good work all around.
The book writer should be put in book writing jail. Although whether the fault is more Bob Martin's or Jerry Mitchell's is hard to tell.
IDK...if you can turn your brain off and not worry about the show making any sense, then you might have a good time? I couldn't.
