Adam Feldman in Timeout is negative: "With the exception of its Cee Cee, alas, almost everything about Beaches is C-minus at best."

NYTimes Laura Collins-Hughes is negative: "So it is absolutely bizarre that “Beaches” the musical, which opened on Wednesday night at the Majestic Theater, is a spectacularly unaffecting experience. Based on the novel, which is more of a backstage story than the movie, this adaptation arrives on Broadway a dozen years after its world premiere but seems like a corner-cutting rush job, in too much of a hurry to take the necessary care."

Variety is negative - "soulless and uninspired"

Adam Feldman at TimeOut is negative (not starred) - "The scars and amputations from all this show doctoring are in painful evidence in the final product"

Having zero expectations just means that, if you didn’t feel compelled to walk out at intermission, then it’s a tick in the win column and everything after is just drivel.

Theatremania is positive: "Beaches is that rare new musical based on well-known intellectual property that manages to exceed our hopes, gently sailing us into an ocean of emotional storytelling until we lose sight of the shore."

All that said, my eyes were more moist than they were a decade ago, perchance a function of my age and growing sentimentality, but also of a story that just is inherently appealing, especially for anyone who has seen cherished friends drop away.

There is an audience for this sentimental piece, I think, given the relative paucity of sincere musicals this season. Women, especially, who remember and love the movie and its signature song will warm to its proffering of a thing devoutly to be wished: your most successful friend telling you they owe it all to you.

Enough for a nice matinee with a bestie, no?

Should anyone in the touring cast fall ill, Mike Stoller’s bland score and Jennifer Rias’ choreography can be performed by most passersby within a mile of your city’s performing arts center. Tracy Christensen’s costumes can be found at Sears right now, J. Jared Janas’ wigs at the Party City next door, and even the shadiest non-union house can quickly rig up Ken Billington’s lighting designs."

It reads much more mixed to me, praises the performances but the calls lyrics “pedestrian,” discusses characters who you shouldn’t care about, criticizes the scale of production versus the stage, and ends by saying it should be a chamber piece somewhere else.

R, you are such a lovely human. But people are paid to review shows and there will be reactions to them on here. I understand the years of work. I understand how awful it is when a show doesn't work out. I understand how hard everyone is working on that stage, which is why I ended my review stating I was heartbroken for the cast, looking out to empty houses every night. But, there is always a bomb every season, and considering they have been working on this for over a decade, the finished product should have been much, much better. It's almost unbelievable how bad it turned out to be. I do hope they all find new jobs quickly.

Vosk seems to be singled out for praise in several of these reviews which otherwise trash the production. Could she end up as their lone Tony nomination?

There is no way anything from this show is nominated with reviews like these, even if Vosk is the saving grace. Sad for all the cast, crew, and musicians involved.
