While I hope it's not LuPone (though I love her) AGAIN, she does have an operatic quality (she's done opera) to her voice that would match a legitimate opera singer. And they WERE originally supposed to do it together.
As soon as I saw the announcement last night, I thought of you! I bet you are beyond excited at the possabilities!
I admit, I am a huge Bernadette fan and would love to see her in the role, and really, wouldn't any Mrs Lovett be drowned out by an operatic Sweeney?
I am no expert, so please don't all shout me down but isn't Mrs Lovett's songs more like "patter" songs - lots of words and sung fast - she doesn't require a huge range. I think Bernadette could manage - she doesn't need her upper register and it's a limited engagement, not a 6 month run!
Not While I'm Around could be heartbreaking - PJ - point taken, she needs to be steely delivering this and not cry as usual.
Like HorseTears, I do worry about the accent tho'
But I can see Miss Peters done up like Nell Gynn, all ringlets and cleavage and knowing winks! Wrong century but hey!
I don't understand criticisms of what Peters will sound like next to Terfel. Mrs Lovett doesn't necessarily require powerhouse vocals (I never felt Staunton was lacking in the recent revival).
I'd be more worried that Peters will get her "Song & Dance" accent out of storage if she were to do this concert.
I've never really got in to Donna Murphy, but I've recently come to appreciate her comedy chops. She might be interesting in the role.
Well, what about Imelda Staunton? I know she doesn't want to commit to a long run of anything here in the states, but for a concert of a few nights duration?
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)
D2, I also thought of Imelda Staunton and would be hugely in favor of her coming here to do ANYTHING, but especially this.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

Staunton would be wonderful. And if the upcoming concert were broadcast on PBS, it would go some ways to make up for the recent revival not being filmed/broadcast as rumoured.
"I admit, I am a huge Bernadette fan and would love to see her in the role, and really, wouldn't any Mrs Lovett be drowned out by an operatic Sweeney?"
No, if the Mrs Lovett has proper sound or squillo to their voice they wont be drowned. I love Bernadette Peters as well but her voice lacks the squillo or volume to sing with Bryn in my opinion.

Staunton was not singing with the new york philharmonic and a bass-baritone who can sing Wagner.
Maria Friedman isn't exactly a powerhouse singer at this stage in her career, but Terfel didn't drown her out when they were on the BBC Proms together.
And casting opera singers as Mrs Lovett hasn't worked out too well in the past...
I would love to see Audra Mcdonald try it. Even though she wouldn't be the first to come to most peoples minds.
If it is someone not in the brodway community Janis Kelly would be phenomenal! She just isn't known and even in the opera community is more independent than commercial. Great singer/actress.
I never saw Voight in Annie get your gun so I have know idea her acting ability with actual text and not in an opera house setting. Updated On: 7/9/13 at 10:00 AM
McDonald or Murphy would both be geniuses in the role. I don't think of Victoria Clark as a Mrs. Lovett type, there's just something a little too sophisticated about her (Lansbury could as easily class it up, as she could slum it, one of her best performances is as the salty maid in GASLIGHT). Somethingwicked, Tracey Ullman is such a great suggestion! Someone get her on the phone.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
I can't think of Bernadette as Lovett because I hear Christine Pedi do her imitation of her in my head. And it's exactly how she would sound trying to sing the role.
I don't WANT to live in what they call "a certain way." In the first place I'd be no good at it and besides that I don't want to be identified with any one class of people. I want to live every whichway, among all kinds---and know them---and understand them---and love them---THAT's what I want! - Philip Barry (Holiday)
The only songs I am interested to know how she will pull off are Worst Pies and God That's Good. She sung quickly in SUNDAY but in NIGHT MUSIC her Glamorous Life was pretty slow. She isn't going to have trouble with Poor Thing, Wait, My Friends or A Little Priest. By the Sea might be a challenge. Her problem is keeping her breath I think. She can still hit notes, sustain notes, belt and sing quietly. This score isn't as difficult as it's made out to be IMO.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I don't see why everyone doubts her vocal ability. I saw Bernadette in concert at NJPAC just over a year ago and she flawlessly controlled the stage singing everything from Let me entertain you to In Buddy's eyes.
I do agree that Donna Murphy would also be amazing in the role.
or what about Sutton Foster? I would love to see her in the role

I love how hyped this casting is. On Bernadette's performance of SEND IN THE CLOWNS on YouTube there is a comment suggesting she should play Mrs Lovett with 165 upvotes. And (although maybe they read BWW) there is a thread about Bernadette playing Lovett on ATC.
Considering she was apparently screen tested for the role, and has been asked numerous times in interviews whether she would play the role, there is no doubt in my mind that she is at least being considered.
