Is this the first week “The Outsiders” is over a million?

That average ticket price for “Home” is scary for them.

Thrilled that Outsiders continues to climb.

If they don't shut imminently, I have a feeling that Heart of Rock and Roll might push itself to the end of the month and close by June 30.

I also anticipate The Notebook sticking around until Labor Day weekend at the very latest if it doesn't close in the weeks following the Tony Awards. I also feel confident that Water for Elephants will make it through Labor Day weekend as well. It's been surprisingly resilient at the Box Office and could go to the end of the year if they pick up some steam over the summer.

I think Gatsby has the legs to make it to the end of the year and close following the holidays. Same with Back to the Future. They're not the box office powerhouse they were for a short while there but the summer is going to give them a huge boost. The tour launches next week and the producers know it will be a massive money maker on the road. They'll make it through the fall and then go out on a high note during the holiday season.

Could it also be safe to say that & Juliet might be entering its final stretch as well?

Second time in the $1M club for The Outsiders.

And Home may be where the heart is, but it damn sure isn't where the grosses are. Yikes.

It was a little over two (ETA: of course I meant one) million two weeks ago as well. I think (hope) The Outsiders and Hell's Kitchen are looking strong for recoupement with or without the Best Musical Tony (obviously "with" would be better).

The Outsiders for Best Musical or else. They definitely need it more than HK which will be doing great anyway even without any Tony wins. And The Outsiders deserves Tony the most out of all nominations in this category, imo.

This is one of those weeks where the grosses seem to strongly indicate who the audience is for each show. Lots of plays and shows like Beautiful Noise and Suffs down because their local audiences preferred barbeques or the beach to Broadway. Meanwhile, Lion King, Wicked, Harry Potter, Back to the Future all up with out-of-towners taking advantage of the long weekend to get in a trip.

Suffs had comps for the Broadway road conference/ road voters. So did Illinoise. Cabaret had a whole fully comped performance.

I feel like there's often a show that closes sooner than we think it will after the Tonys. And I feel like that might be The Notebook this year. While I do think it most likely will hang on through the summer, an early or mid summer closing wouldn't shock me.

Very plausible. I think some producers though do want to see how things play out in June and July now that the market is going to change come the week of the Fourth of July. Eight productions such as big plays and high profile productions like Merrily are set to close in the coming six weeks so I think as the supply of shows decreases and the summer demand picks up, producers are hopeful that their shows can gain some traction and make a run for it.

A Beautiful Noise closing soon should give Tommy a lift in July and beyond if they hold on a bit.

Overall, a decent start to the 2024-25 season, we’re in a slightly better place than last year but there’s still some room to grow.

I don't think it's the same target demographic.

I guess even the most struggling of shows just care about selling full-priced tickets. I do not get the absence of discount codes. I feel the only way to get discount tix now is to literally have to wait on line at TKTS or for rush.

Agreed, my mom loved A Beautiful Noise but hated Tommy

During awards season (which also coincides with timing for your announcements/bookings), shows always try to avoid giving off the perception they’re struggling with discounts in the market. Expect some to pop up come late-June, particularly for fall performance dates.

re HOME low numbers

I think it's normal for non profits to have really low numbers when they open shows in the summer.

This. I worked for a nonprofit theater ages ago and subscribers either didn’t pick summer shows or would opt to reschedule at a very high frequency- this is a demographic that is often out of town in the summer months.

This comment piqued my curiosity so I went poking around a little; as far as I can tell, the only 2 non-profit Broadway productions in the last decade+ to have a summer opening were Roundabout's Marvin's Room and Second Stage's Straight White Men. Am I missing any others? Genuinely curious.

And it's true that both shows had pretty low numbers.

Although I wonder if you can really paint a picture with such a small sample size. Straight White Men's grosses weren't THAT much lower than those of its spring predecessor Lobby Hero, which benefited from more star power, more awards attention, and (IIRC) better public reception overall. And likewise, Marvin's Room had too little commercial appeal to make it feel like a fair comparison to ITS Spring predecessor, The Price, with its starry cast.

And even aside from all that, Home is still doing somewhat more poorly than either Straight White Men or Marvin's Room were at this point in their respective runs (after 1 partial week and 1 full week): they were averaging about $27k and $39k per performance, while Home is averaging about $16.5k per performance.

EDIT: After reading Kad's comment above, it only just occurred to me that you might've been speaking to non-profits in general, not just Broadway non-profits. But in my defense, I was thinking of your comment about "low numbers" which I (maybe wrongly) took to be referring to the publicly available grosses, which of course are exclusive to Broadway. In any case, it was a fun little rabbit hole to go down either way, lol

I don't have data to back this up, but I'd think May/June is especially rough for new shows, especially little new shows. If you open later in the summer, you can carve out some space for yourself in the zeitgeist. Right now? Everything is either Tony campaigning or Fall show announcements/updates/on-sales. Nobody's thinking or talking about a little play at Roundabout.

With the &Juliet tour launching in September, maybe they'll try to hold out until the end of the year? Give their new cast member time to grow, see how she does, then potentially close up shop by the end of the year if their numbers aren't where they were when Lorna was in the show?

I'd be surprised if & Juliet closed before attempting any kind of stunt casting, but maybe the team and Eva purposefully don't want to go that route. After seeing Joey Fatone visit recently, seems like they could put ex boy and girl group stars in some of these roles (Mel B as Nurse, Lance Bass as Lance, yada yada). I'd respect them if they went out on a high note and chose to not do that, though.
