Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 1/1/23

SOME THOUGHTS:

How close is LION KING's $4.3M to a record-high? Because that number just makes the eyes water.

When was the last time HAMILTON was out of the top 5? Feels notable but maybe not.

Nice solid numbers for SLIH, ALMOST FAMOUS, and STRANGE LOOP.

This might be the first time KIMBERLY broke even in a week.

Am I seeing things or did Funny Girl really get to $2,405,901? Daaammmnn, that’s amazing!!!

I believe Hamilton held the record with 4.04 million for this same week in 2018. So this will take the record If that’s correct.

Beaumont isn't really so big, it's layout just makes it feel big. that being said, Mike B's performance as a low tier celebrity in a one-man show has been impressive. I had no idea who he was before he announced this show, but he seems to have some committed fans and I keep hearing wonderful things about it!

Some shows at the bottom are still doing rough, but attendance decreased for only three shows (with one being A Christmas Carol playing after Christmas and another being a show where the star didn't perform in 3 performances) and grosses only decreased for said Christmas show still open post-Christmas. Lion King is INSANE! Happy to see Piano Lesson, Some Like it Hot, and Almost Famous all finally crack $1 Million and to see Beetlejuice and Phantom fly past $2 Million.

And, of course, I'm always happy for any success for Kimberly Akimbo! I'm guessing the weekly running cost is between $500,000 and $550,000, so they definitely made some money this week. I have faith that they have the reserves to run until June."

For a show with limited advertising and no recognizable IP nor awards in one of the smallest houses on Broadway and only doing 8 performances is compared to many others doing nine I would say Kimberly Akimbo did pretty well last week. Add to that it’s average ticket price was $10 higher than A Strange Loop, so we need to keep the expectations for the show in check. These would be the grosses I would expect from it during awards season so hopefully it’s a sign of things to come. Kimberly akimbo is clearly a word of mouth hit, let’s just hope the cult of fans it’s created can sustain it through the winter until awards season, with minimal losses.

Yeah, that's what I mean. I mean, he's a name to me, but I can't imagine a ton of people know who he and he was playing in a much smaller venue in Los Angeles. So, good for him!

Also really impressed by Beetlejuice. Clearly they crunched the numbers and it didn't make sense to downsize and move to another theater although they seem to be doing great.

These grossings are lovely! Also, does anyone know if a cast change at MJ is happening soon as it's approaching 1 year? Would the show be able to go on if Myles Frost leaves?

MJ will have many, many underwhelming replacements that won’t match Frost’s level of greatness before the show eventually closes, but at this rate, that’s going to be very far away.

Talent and skills no longer matter for the Tony awards. Just be a good impersonator. Looking more and more like Vegas.

What's cool is MikeBirbiglia had a show on Broadway just a few years ago called The New One. Many have probably seen the taped performance on Netflix. He also had another show called Sleepwalk With Me that was turned into a fairly successful little indie film. He recently had a high profile gig guest hosting for Jimmy Kimmel when Kimmel came down with COVID. Mike received great notices for his stint. He's a prize winning humorist and has appeared on NPR shows and frequently collaborates with Ira Glass. His film Don't Think Twice is wonderful. He also had a high profile guest starring role in a Taylor Swift video, Anti-Hero. So he's been slowly on the rise.

I caught The Old Man & the Pool at Steppenwolf in Chicago. And it was absolutely hilarious. We are talking a laugh every few seconds. Even his preshow announcement about not taking photographs during the show had everyone laughing hard. But it's not just a series of punchlines--the stories have bite and meaning. And he goes dark places with anecdotes about his personal health journey. Glad to see the show is doing so well. I do admit that I wondered if the Beaumont would be a good fit for a one person show. I usually think of that as the venue that has BIG shows like War Horse or King & I."

Hoping this one gets filmed too! Glad it's doing well.

I’m sure many cast and crew members breathed a bit easier today. So happy for all!
