I know! How is it happening!? I know people who rushed out because they love Donna’s summer and they hated it. And I know musical fans who see everything, and THEY hated it. WHO is the market for this show?!

Numbers for Iceman Cometh are amazing too. Wow!
Also impressed that Carousel has had 9 weeks of making over $1 mil.

Re: Summer
If it’s finding an audience, that’s great. I’m not that audience and that’s OK.

It’s not a matter of my personal distaste, I’m simply more inclined to support a show taking up space when it’s actually good and the majority of people agree on that. That’s not the case with this show.

And yet if it turns out to be a hit, I'd imagine they'll soldier on somehow with or without your support.

Even though you have no first hand knowledge, you are taking your friends opinions at face value, have decided as a result this is a bad show and can't understand who would actually want to see it. If that isn't a judgment call, I don't know what is.

That’s not a judgment call. That’s hearing firsthand feedback, seeing that it has the lowest score of ANY Broadway show on ShowScore, knowing it was critically panned, and yet also hearing that people are dancing in the aisles and going gaga for it as grosses continue to go up and up. My observation is that it’s not traditional show goers who are filling the seats and from a limited pool of dedicated Donna Summer fans I know, it doesn’t seem to be for the hardest of her hard core fans. So my surprise remains that it’s doing so well because I can’t work out who the target demographic is that’s filling seats. I haven’t said a single negative thing about the show itself. I have observed that others have done so and expressed my inability to put together who it is that’s filling the seats.
Maybe there’s a very obvious answer and I’m being an idiot, but I’m not sure why UncleCharlie is suggesting I’m being a jerk.

I wasn't suggesting you were being a jerk There's nothing wrong with using your judgment. Everything you described above, weighing information from a variety of sources and using that info to draw a conclusion about the merits of a show.is using judgment. I'm just reacting to your claim it's not a judgment call when you are clearly applying judgment. It can have a variety of target audiences, people who love 80's music, people who loved disco, people who love dance music and on and on. Jukebox musicals always appeal to certain people. Who is the Go-Gos musical targeted to other than their fans. But people are going to see it. Just because your circle of Donna Summer loving friends didn't like it doesn't mean many others of her fan base aren't going to see this.

Who are you to judge what constitutes "actually good"? Clearly, if enough people enjoy it enough to keep it afloat, then that's plenty of people who consider it good, and that's all they need. "The majority of people" don't need to agree that it's good. If we asked everyone in the entire universe if it is vitally, 100% necessary for Broadway period to exist, and 50.000000001% percent said "No", does that mean all of Broadway period shouldn't exist and we should just set the entire theater district on fire?

I've never understood people's fanatical compulsion to drive out a show that they don't personally care for. I'm not a Hello Dolly! fan, but I don't spend my time trying to rain on the parade for those who love it. Don't these people have anything better to do?

On a completely different show, I am glad to see the numbers for Angels in America go up from last week. it certainly is a commitment to see both but i am glad many are.

Oh, please. The show was almost unanimously panned in reviews and I have yet to see a single person who said that they genuinely, thoroughly enjoyed it. Say what you want - I do not support this show being on Broadway and would much rather see something else taking up valuable real estate. Kudos to the cast who are working their asses off. If only the material served their talents better.

I am glad to see that serious drama still has a place on Broadway- I saw Iceman- and loved it. Have seen several productions of Angels- and it is a great and serious play- so glad Three Tall Women is doing well. Of course, these are all revivals- not a bad thing at all- but I would also love to see some serious drama that is new up on the boards. Several years ago, remember being blown away by Mother****er With The Hat- and Good People- loved those shows. I hope for more contemporary, serious drama. And it does not hurt to have a superstar to head it- would love to see McDormand tackle something new- or Emma Stone- Jennifer Lawrence- Ryan Reynolds has acting chops- so does Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt- would love to see one of them try something soon. Denzel is one who comes back to Broadway every few years- good for him. Love him.

Sheesh A Bronx Tale made just slightly over 600,000. Is that why they are bringing in Chazz as Sonny?
