Why??"
A lot of shows are focusing their marketing on the World Cup fans right now. A closing bump isn't guaranteed, and sometimes announcing closing devalues the brand more. I know at least one show in another host city that is currently discussing pulling the plug but there's pressure to keep up appearances for the tourists there currently."
Is this about Paranormal Activity in Boston?

All of these "Wicked has nothing to worry about" is what everybody used to say about Phantom in those final years until suddenly.....

It is not, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's something similar happening there too.

Literally one person said it…
But it’s also true. PHANTOM’s grosses and capacities were also MUCH, much lower (consistently) before they announced closing.
WICKED is fine, for now.

Wicked also had extraordinary grosses over the last two years thanks to the movies. It had the highest weekly gross in Broadway history over the 2024 holidays, breaking $5 mil. That wasn't sustainable and we're seeing that bubble burst. I don't think it's in imminent danger of closing, but it is in a correction period after such sustained interest.

thats it
broadway is closing in 2027
it had a good run
there is now way all of Broadway will be closing in 2027. There’s no way theatres are just gonna be left completely empty for long stretches of time than usual…there would have to be a January 2009 situation

Head of BLS who was telling the truth about the jobs situation has been fired last year by Trump who accused her of trying to damage Republicans politically. We are not told the truth about real unemployment numbers and many people who lost jobs have run out of unemployment and no longer are part of stats anyway. I have never know that many people in their 40s and 50s not able to find work for now close to 2 years. The number of home foreclosures in 2025 have increased by 17% comparing to 2024, so that number should tell you something. He number of homes for sale is higher than the number of people looking to buy a home. It's worse than 2009, it's just the media bent the knee and no longer allowed to tell the truth.

So you're saying that we're already in a recession and the broadway bubble has officially burst? so what do we do?

No, no one is saying that. More than a dozen shows have already announced an opening for next season. A number of long-running shows are in no danger.
The collective sentiment is simply that lots of shows running right now won't be running in a year's time. Which has never been a bold claim at any point in the history of Brodway theatre, but things do seem a little worse right now than usual. A short while ago we had a brief period where every Broadway venue was occupied; it's hard to imagine that happening again anytime soon.

well on the flip side New York State Budget Adds $150 Million to NYC Theatrical Production Tax Credit...so hopefully that provides some hope and we have a new mayor that is a patron of the arts

ppl
my post was tongue in cheek
theres a lot of unnecessary handwringing happening
and over the top comments regarding the state of the industry
broadway survived a pandemic
and came back to life after 18 months with no pulse
but here is what is also true
broadway isnt exactly thriving either
and the current economy is in the toilet for the vast majority of americans
there has been so much consolidation of wealth up to the top .01%
we literally no longer have enough rich patrons to sustain long runs of most shows
while wicked isnt in immediate danger
it is starting to show its age
and losing pop culture relevance
the quality of the wicked broadway production these days is awful
but it is a good barometer of where things stand
no need to panic
yet

To be clear, I understood both the tone of your post and the intended message. And I was disagreeing with that intended message: I don't see any excessive handwringing, just a recognition that things are a little dicey right now.

I'd have to imagine Wicked has some money put aside for these occasions, no? Do Broadway shows that have long since recouped create a "contingency fund" from their profits?
I'd be more concerned for The Book of Mormon if we are worried about a long runner.
