Broadway's Best Kept Secrets - Passion + Paddington

Paddington isn't a secret. They wouldn't have done that bit at the Tony's if it wasn't true (clearly it was promotional). Plus, a casting call was put out a couple months ago for Broadway.
Passion, I've heard the rumors too but I have absolutely no clue about.

Paddington likely becomes official once Moulin Rouge closes.

I am skeptical about Passion coming this season since we know Evita will be. Jamie Lloyd might want to space things out, but work is work and you gotta take it when you can.

I can understand why Erivo might want to do this, because the role is awards-bate. Why would Groff, though? The show attracts a niche audience at best, his most ardent fan-base would probably HATE the show, and it is so dreary. I will admit that I only saw this once, with the original cast, but I could not wait for it to end. The fact that it won the Tony and ran for about 6 months demonstrates its serious lack of broad audience appeal. Really a supporting role, I am not sure what it does for his career.

I can think of a few reasons why he'd want to costar in a major Broadway revival of a Sondheim musical with a massive talent and directed by the hottest director working right now.

And yet Groff starred in Merrily We Roll Along, one of the floppiest flops to ever flop.
I'm not a fan of Passion but if it's being revived with stars like Erivo and Groff, it will do well.

I really don’t think Cynthia Erivo would take a job just because it is "awards bait".

Secrets lol, ones discussed here at length in other threads and one was all but announced during the TONY opening number.

If Passion is happening I would be absolutely stunned if we see it in the 26/27 season.

I thought Assassins was coming in as well.

Oh I do. It's quite obvious thats what she's aiming for with her stage and film choices.

I think she is an amazing talent but I have to agree with you on this.

Really? I'd be surprised if that was the sole factor in her decision-making. Months of her life sweating over something she has no emotional connection to? She doesn't need to prove herself anymore.

I'm unfamiliar with the Assassins rumor. Is it the Classic Stage Company production from a few years ago coming in or is it a new production?

Apparently Robert Icke is doing it in 2027.

If that's the case, would love to have Pasquale, Swenson, and Slater return.

Good lord what drivel this is. The woman won a Tony for her Broadway debut and is one award away from an EGOT. She doesn't have to chase awards.

Who said she has to? I just think she does.

If Cynthia does Fosca it will be because it's a complex, challenging role written by one of the greatest composers of all time, in a first class production.

I heard about this as well but thought it was off-Broadway.
I hear more and more about PASSION everyday, it seems like a foregone conclusion at this point.
Also with the rumors of Ariana 'pulling out' of the Barbican SUNDAY, I wonder if they are scrapping it across the pond and fast tracking to Broadway given there will be a lot of large houses available.

I don’t think that’s how the Barbican works.

Merrily was not exactly Passion. In the intervening years since it originally flopped, a number of songs became well known, there had been a successful production in London that had been successful in Boston as well, the same director was mounting it again, it had humor. Franklin Shepherd was the lead and a plum role.that was perfect for Groff.
Passion is a dirge, devoid of humor, and not a melodious song in the score IMO . It verges on 'atonal Sondheim'. When I originally saw it, about 50 people in the 2/3 filled orchestra had walked out before the performance was over; it clearly has limited appeal. It is essentially a vehicle for Fosca, which is why I could see Erivo wanting to be in it. But as a followup to Merrily and JIT, it makes no sense to me, unless it is a limited engagement by a son-profit subscription company, e.g., Rounabout or MTG or Lincoln Center in the Newhouse.
