Captain is an acting role. You don't need an amazing voice.
I wonder who will be Mother. You'd need a star.
I agree about the Captain in that it's an acting role, and as long as he has a good enough voice it would work. I don't think Mother Abbess, however, needs to be a star. She just has to have a great operatic voice. A reasonably well-known opera singer could play this role. For Mother Abbess, the role is about being a benevolent authority figure and having a big, soaring voice for "Climb Ev'ry Mountain". I don't know of any TV or movie stars who have a voice like that.
^Christine Baranski, but she's on a competing network.

If they decide to include the song, "Something Good", like they did in the 2006 West End Revival, they will have to get someone who has a voice that is as strong as Underwood's. Andrews' voice was much too strong for Plummer's and that is why they decided to have Bill Lee dub his singing. I think they should get a stage actress with an excellent soprano for the role of Mother Abbess.

I'll bet they get someone known to TV audiences for the Mother Superior though.
Somebody like Shirley Jones or Florence Henderson.
As for the Captain, unless he fakes the guitar on live TV, he will have to be a singer/musician. He does not need a great voice, and the acting comes first, but he can't be tone deaf or lack musical ability.
Theodore Bikel was a recording artist and popular folk singer. Christopher Plummer was dubbed.
On live TV, they'll need someone up to playing the part.
You know who would be great as the Captain if he wasn't so completely insane? His acting and persona would be great, plus he can sing and play the guitar. And I think he'd love doing live TV, because he's so risky ... which is the dangerous part.
Joaquin Phoenix.
EDIT: But half the fun would be tuning in to see if he would start rapping swear words or take off all his clothes in the middle of the performance.

"If they decide to include the song, "Something Good"...
They're using the original Broadway script and will include "An Ordinary Couple," not "Something Good."
"He sings most of "Edelweiss" on his own."
Well, not really. He sings the first verse and then Maria and the children join him for the 2nd verse. It's certainly his big musical moment, though.

No one uses the original script anymore.

^ Oh sure they do. I'm sure some put "My Favorite Things" in the bedroom with the kids and try to do a marionette show for "Lonely Goatherd" but those are not authorized changes. And R&H has already confirmed that they're using the original script for this production.

I guess we'll see.

The widow Crouse will not allow the movie changes for this production. She did allow them for the revival, regretted it and said never again.

I guess she has no jurisdiction over the foreign rights? The Andrew Lloyd Webber production had "I Have Confidence" and "Something Good" in it. Updated On: 7/5/13 at 03:42 PM

Someone is getting into the spirit of this musical.
Carrie Underwood Visits Austria Ahead Of SOUND OF MUSIC
I actually think she will be great in this. Not sure why people are dissing her when they haven't heard her sing one song from it. Lets try and keep an open mind folks.

^ She has sung the title song before but this event was five years ago.

Well...That was stupendously beautiful.
I really enjoyed that.
I think it says a lot about the strength of the song and of the singer. Those R&H songs have rock-solid music and lyrics that allow new interpretations without suffering a loss of meaning or impact.
I think she'll do well in the part.
I think she'll do good. If she does a amazing job and she likes it, maybe we can see her on Broadway soon after? Baker's Wife in the Into the Woods revival?
Kristin Chenowth and Laura Bell Bundy as well as many other performers also sing country! So I don't see why a country musician is wrong for the part. Although I would've loved to see Laura Osnes or Samantha Barks as Maria.

I'll say it again: Carrie Underwood's "Hello, Young Lovers" on AMERICAN IDOL was one of the worst performances ever by an eventual winner.
Let's hope she's learned to sing Broadway since then. Maria does not hail from a convent in the Ozarks!

Really? The London 1981 revival, the West End revival, and the recent Carnegie Hall concert all added I Have Confidence and Something Good. Some of these even shifted My Favorite Things to the bedroom and put The Lonely Goatherd somewhere else. I don't see why Widow Crouse would not approve. It's not as if the lines change. Just the placement of the songs.
Can anyone really argue that sing "My Favorite Things" with the children makes more sense than singing it with the Mother Abbess?

Exactly! If they really need a song in the Abbey scene, just do what the Petula Clark revival did and use "A Bell is no Bell" for the Mother Abbess and Maria.
For the West End revival, "Favorite Things" was sung with the Mother Abbess and Maria and then later with Maria the children during the thunderstorm, like in the film. When the production went on tour, however, apparently the R&H people made them go back to singing "Lonely Goatherd" in the thunderstorm scene.
Also, I'm fairly sure the licensed version of Sound of Music allows the option to use "I Have Confidence" and "Something Good".
I have zero problems with the fact she's a country singer, my issue stems from the fact she's never exhibited a knack for comedy and strong line delivery. But who knows? Maybe she'll give a Reba-sized performance (though Reba was ideally cast as Annie Oakley).
