"Cheap" but decent hotels in Midtown/Theater District?

I am from DC but am often in NY for work. However, I am going to the City the first week in November to see "Wicked" with my little sister along with another yet-to-be-agreed-upon show. Normally, my work pays for the hotel (usually the Crowne Plaza at the UN), so I never really have had to search for my own. Any recommendations on *cheap* (by Manhattan standards, of course) hotels in that area? I looked at Hotels.com. Has anyone stayed at "Manhattan Broadway"?

It ain't the Ritz, but the Edison on West 47th Street is a cheap, decent place to stay, and it's well located.

I used to stay at the Marquis... they may be out of the price range you're looking for though. Um, I once stayed at the Milford Plaza...it wasn't bad, but the rooms weren't very spacious. :- I believe it's on... 8th and 47th? Somewhere around there.

The Days Inn at (I think) 48th and 8th is really nice and pretty inexpensive.

Get thee to the Milford Plaza, the Edison or the Broadway B&B. They are all heinous but affordable even for the poorest mice among us.

The Edison has a great little diner downstairs, too. :) I've never actually stayed at the hotel, though.

Unfortunately, it looks as if there are no rooms at the "Edison" for November 6-9. I am not really picky. I used hostels while I was in Europe for a semester. I am, however, going with my 17 yr old sister who is very much a princess. However, I am paying since she bought the tickets...so she will just have to deal with whatever we get. Its not like we will spend alot of time there.

Well, I'm a bit of a princess and had no fun at the Milford. The only highlight of that weekend was seeing The Dead... and even then, I was scared to death by Mr. Walken. LOL.

But, now... 4 years later, having had more experience with money management and living on my own, I say, screw your sister! Whatever you can afford... you won't be spending long periods of time in the hotel room anyway if you're here for a visit, right? It's just a place to sleep!

The Milford isn't all that bad. It fronts 8th Ave. but takes up the entire block from 44th to 45th. It's Eastern wall butts up to Broadway theaters walls so you know you right there. Less than 2 blocks away are also great fun places like Joe Allens, Don't Tell Mama, Frankie and Johnny's, Sardi's, and Times Square ticket booth. Think of all the cab fare you can save! Smallish rooms are not such a bad trade off. Besides why come to NYC if all you want to do is spend time in a hotel room - large or not?

Try hotwire.com and type in Times Square. You can't choose your hotel but you WILL get great deals. I love it!

The Edison would be my first choice, in fact I'll be there the days you mentioned, booked it on hotels.com about a month ago, and paid a bit more than the last times we stayed there, so it seems like tourism is up for NYC. Coincidently, we'll also be seeing Wicked and Boy From Oz and maybe one more.
Another good budget choice is the Best Western President, around the corner on 48th. For a few bucks more, I noticed The Time Hotel had a promo on hotels.com. This is also nearby and a first class place and very chic, but I allready booked the Edison.
Even if you don't stay there, visit the Edison coffee shop, the blinzes are great!

The Skyline is a little west of Times Square on 10th Avenue--an easy walk to the theatres. It's nothing fancy and the service is actually kinda bad (doormen who NEVER open the door), but it is a good deal and the rooms are clean and large. Plus I love Hell's Kitchen and that area--every block is filled with restaurants, little delis and pubs.

(Is 'delis' the plural of 'deli?' That doesn't look right.)

Here is my warning about Midtown: Do NOT stay at the New Yorker (aka Ramada New Yorker). You may think, "Wow, the price is GREAT and it is a Ramada so it must be nice." DON'T YOU BELIEVE IT. The lobby looks fine but once you get off the elevator on your floor, IT IS A DUMP! A DUMP, I tells ya!!! Tiny rooms, dirty carpet, worn-out tile and wallpaper, and ancient, tiny bathrooms. AVOID.

My wife & I stayed at the Millenium on 44 th st. We were underwhelmed by the room. We switched from a smoking room with free coffee to a non smoking one with no coffee, a stained bedspread & an air conditioning unit you could not use. There were few amenities . At almost $ 210 ( tax included) it definitely was not worth it.

Try the restaurant across the street called Osteria Al Doge . Great food, nice portions & great service. Next year, we will stay elsewhere

Edison Hotel or Hotel Edison (I've heard and read both names) is a lovely hotel. I stayed there last December and most likely am staying there once again this coming December. Nice lobby. Great cafe. My only complaint is that they were only 2 working elevators in the hotel at the time I was there. I think there was maybe 4 or 5 of them. And 2 elevators in a hotel packed w/ tourists on bus trips aren't very fun.

Don't be afraid to try Priceline. I'm staying at the Renaissance smack dab in the middle of Time's Square for $150.00 in a couple of weeks. It was half the price of the advertised rate at the time. Updated On: 9/22/03 at 04:06 AM

I, too have stayed at the Edison and recommend it to you if you come to the city again. I will also be in NYC the 6th - 9th. Have tickets to "Boy From Oz" -- can't wait!

Incidentally, for my last meeting at the UN, half of our team stayed at the Millenium while the other half (including me) stayed at the Crowne Plaza at the UN. I heard the same complaints about the Millenium from them.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up booking a room at the Days Inn on 48th for a decent price.

Now, my sister and I just have to agree on a second show besides "Wicked."

I am from the West Coast and my friend said she stayed at the YMCA Vanderblit on East 47th St..She said it was fine...Can anyone tell me how far this Hotel is from the Theatre District?...and also is it nice?...I have never been to NYC and I might be going in December....
