Posted: 9/9/09 at 10:16pmWe don't have a vaudeville. And if anybody can do something good with the form it's David Shiner and Cirque.

We HAD A vaudeville tradition. We HAD a Circus, too.I am sorry but Soleil is not a circus.I hope they never have an ideia or a CONCEPT for a BROADWAY Soleil show.Well, SPIDERMAN (not a Soleil show) is in the works...

Posted: 9/9/09 at 10:33pmIn all fairness... if we're so tight-fisted about "our vaudeville," shouldn't we be using it somewhere? The last genuine vaudeville on Broadway was a limited engagement of "Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me."

Well, with your post LizzieCurry I prefer to forget these really ridiculous thoughts about the end of the Circus in America.Ok,Vaudeville is gone too.But it lives in the memory of a lot of people. And this people deserve respect.End of my comments, right ?

Posted: 9/9/09 at 11:42pmWill Rogers, you have to understand that Cirque is more focused on the art of both clowning and acrobatics, both of which are considered circus arts. A Circus doesn't have to have animals to be considered one. Cirque does tend to take its ideas from the European side of the art form over the American side.

The reason vaudeville died is that if it's performed in its traditional fashion unchanged, it's really poor man's television now. For instance, Saturday Night Live (at its best) and A Bit Of Fry And Laurie both offer up the vaudeville tradition at its finest- a cadre of multi-talented performers, with sketches, recurring characters based on audience popularity, slapstic, topical satire (which plays better on TV than onstage, merely because syndication is easier to maintain than an extended run of a show whose issues would "go cold"), and music in its popular, virtuosic or humor-based forms.
Martin Short's show was revolutionary for trying to do vaudeville onstage again and succeeding by its own ambition, but it was far from the rebirth of vaudeville. For the record, if anyone can do vaudeville on stage or tour better than television can, I'd like to see it happen.

Obviously, Will, likes lots of animal abuse mixed in with his acrobatics.
Hey, maybe they could whip lions and tigers, and poke elephants on stage.

...TIME marches on! And eventually, there will come a time when members lament the passing of the great theatrical tradition that was once known as Cirque du Soleil!
David Shiner has brought me joy and laughter from Cirque in the past, as well as Fool Moon and Seussical on Broadway.
If anyone can revive the artform, Shiner can. I despised Fame Becomes Me however, and I missed GRIND.

"Ok,Vaudeville is gone too.But it lives in the memory of a lot of people."
It does? Unless you're talking about octogenarians who were five when they saw it, I don't think so.
... or June Havoc, who was ten when she headlined. And she'll be 96 in November.

Where is the argument here? In Cirque's own PR release they say they are NOT circus, or a musical, or a variety show or even vaudeville.
"Banana Shpeel is a roller-coaster mix of styles that blends comedy with tap, hip hop, eccentric dance and slapstick, all linked by a narrative that ignites a succession of wacky adventures. This is not circus, or a musical or a variety show, or even vaudeville. It is Banana Shpeel!"
So again....what is the point of this aurgument? Clearly some just like to see their own posts.

Posted: 9/10/09 at 9:09pmI think that the OP is convinced that Cirque Du Soleil is not a real circus period. Regardless of what show they are working on or doing.
