Come From Away Broadway Revival Status?

Wondering what happened to the planned transfer that was reportedly playing an extremely limited engagement at the Barrymore Theatre this fall to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11th Terrorist Attacks? We’re barely a month away from the anniversary and nothing has been announced or put on sale. Is it safe to assume the transfer is no longer happening at this point?

Probably safe to say. It's being done by/at EVERY. SINGLE. regional, community and church basement right now and next year.

Sadly, the Barrymore will be dark until next April, probably.

The original production should have never closed in the first place.

This. But I’m somewhat glad it did because the final performance was the greatest experience in a theater I have ever had and will ever have.

The amateur rights were blocked from Sept-Dec. Hence why it was believed it was returning for a limited engagement.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Standing the with writer next to you on the first ever New York preview was spectacular. The roar that started in that theatre after the show ending was something I’ve never seen since.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Come From Away Broadway Revival Status?

I found this show really cloying and one-note back when it ran, just relentless and literal exposition and telling you how to feel about everything is my memory. Like I couldn't be trusted to sit in anything or have a genuine reaction for more than a second, with virtually nothing dramatized and everything told at you. But I'd be curious to see it again. There was so much quality in the 2010s that several shows from those years that I didn't think much of at the time have really appreciated for me in comparison to the current landscape.

How expensive would it have been to do this, though? It's not an elaborate set.

I'm sort of surprised it couldn't come together for the 25th 9/11 anniversary; the Paper Mill production sold out for much of its run earlier this year. And while Come From Away has sold well regionally, too, I'd think a Broadway return could do quite well for at least a bit.

The rumor was the Papermill production was going to transfer. So the set was already built and in storage.

Did not see the Paper Mill version. Would've liked to.

Did see a Seattle musician / actor version. Did not care for it. It tried way too hard and felt watered down John Doyle with awkward movement. Had high hopes but it was a bust for my daughter and I.

This wonderful show is done all over the place all the time and it also has a fantastic pro-shot. It does not need to come back to Broadway for any reason. And if it was going to come back this Fall around the Anniversary, it would have been announced months ago.

They were blocked. Amateur rights that is.

Re: Come From Away Broadway Revival Status?

I’m not sure that the 25th anniversary of 9/11 is going to be the selling point the producers of this revival seem to think that it is.

Re: Come From Away Broadway Revival Status?

I mean what more evidence do you need then what has already been provided? It's being done a ton across the country regionally, there's a production being done in DC around the 9/11 anniversary. As stated above, if this was happening (especially around the anniversary of 9/11) it would have been announced months ago.

I think the show doesn't need to come back to Broadway as previously stated. It's doing very well in regional and community theaters. The proshot is on AppleTV and easily available for anyone who wants to see it. Not every show needs to be rushed back to Broadway within 5 years of closing.

Re: Come From Away Broadway Revival Status?

A NYC concert version is happening at the 9/11 memorial this September. That could be what’s impacting amateur rights availability. https://pacnyc.org/whats-on/come-from-away-in-concert/

There’s no such thing as a cheap musical nowadays, even one that has been done at a regional theatre or that’s making a return engagement. Would cost at least $10 million, which means it would have to sell out at a high price for the better part of a year+ to recoup.

common sense confirms this

if the show was scheduled to open within the next couple of months

their marketing team should already have been fired for gross incompetence

it is likely that they arent bringing this back to broadway because they didnt want to lose tons of money

like pretty much every other musical that has opened since the pandemic
