"Does Simon always write like that?
Yes, he does. He likes to think of himself as a cunning linguist.
I'm surprised Simon raved for Debra like that. She's not a 25-year-old supermodel-type. She must REAAAAALLLLYYY be good.

They loved it.
Cheer up, kids. If DROWSY can get over Brantley's pan (by using creative pull-quotes) there is no reason why CURTAINS can't too.
Love the Simon review. Who knew he liked musical comedy?

Kelly Ripa and Neil Patrick Harris just gave the show (and Debra) a terrific plug.
National exposure at its finest.
Man, it's gonna be SO hard to get a date with her now.
Cheer up, Rath, Ziemba's notices haven't been all that superlative so maybe she'll take you back!
(edited, because it's just not worth it)
I met Karen a few months ago. Swee Tee!
Well, both Karen and Debbie were GREAT in their roles. Debbie's material is much showier and Karen's (IMO) don't necessarily utilize her strengths to their greatest value.
Karen just has the one number that really shows her off.
Curtains doesn't come close to Drowsy in terms of quality. I saw the show last night and was disappointed. I expected so much more after reading all of the comments here on the board. I also expected so much more from a Kander & Ebb show.
I like what Brantley said about DHP: A soft sell star in a hard sell world.
Very true.
"He likes to think of himself as a cunning linguist."
Oh...don't tempt me!!!!
I love that Eve Plumb was on the red carpet!
MasterLcZ, I wouldn't call Brantley's review of DROWSY a pan, nor would I call his review of CURTAINS a pan. I'd call it positive. Just not a rave, per se.
Pretty much what I expected.
I liked "Curtains," a lot. But it has problems. A murder-mystery-musical has never been successful, largely because it's very hard to musically delineate characters while at the same time keeping them murky for purposes of the plot. (See "Something's Afoot.")
Nevertheless, I enjoyed this show. It occasionally works like gangbusters.
I hope people give it a chance.
Matthew Murray has more important things to think about than a silly little review!
The fact is, this show would've been fresher five years ago. A lot of folks are understandably tired of the "love letter to the musical theater" homage constructions that SPAMALO, DROWSY and others are built on. There's only so much room for all that nostalgic send-up and self-love on the NY boards at one time. This show has strong merits, a wonderful cast, but let's face it, there's something been-there/done that about yet another contrived piece of musical theater that sings and winks incessently about ... the virtues of musical theater.
"The fact is, this show would've been fresher five years ago."
I don't think so. This show would have been fresher forty-five years ago.
That said, I enjoyed it. And I think is displays more craft than either "Spring Awakening" or "Grey Gardens."
Yup. Up in the rafters with the poor folk (mezzanine row P). Very enthusiastic audience! Almost stopped the show with applause a few times!
Hey, courtnyj, I was in Mezz row O last night! I wonder if I blocked your view.
On a side note, row O in the Mezz at the Hirschfeld is wonderful because (I think) it's as far from the stage as you can possibly get and still pay $111.
I have not seen the show in NY. But it seems to have improved since the mess it was in Los Angeles. Still.. it sounds like a flop.
I doubt it will flop. Read my earlier post. The press office has been on it bigtime, Hyde Pierce is a star with a wonderful star turn, and there are myriad quotes to be used from the reviews.
Oh.. it will have some kind of run. I am sure of that. But it will flop.
Okay. If it does, we'll remember that you called it.
