I’m a big fan of "Death Becomes Her" and absolutely loved what Megan Hilty did. Her performance was indelible. When Betsy Wolfe was cast, I was genuinely excited because I've always found her to be a really wonderful performer with great instincts.
Megan steamrolled through the show. Betsy approaches it with more restraint. She’s very good, but where Megan created a truly big, fully lived-in character, Betsy’s Madeline feels a bit more medium-sized. (For instance, early on, she tries some sharper, barked line readings as if she's abut to explode, but then pulls back into something softer -- and that bolder choice doesn’t fully carry through the end of Act One or into Act Two.)
Comedically, Megan punched everything right away. Betsy lets moments breathe more. That’s not inherently wrong, but it does slow the momentum in places.
Megan also made everything look effortless, both the comedy and the singing. With Betsy, you can sometimes see the effort behind it.
That said, it’s absolutely still worth going. And if you saw Megan, I’d be really curious how you respond to Betsy’s take. And if you’ve never seen the show at all, you’ll have a fantastic time. It’s still a wildly fun night at the theater.
