Sounds like a pretty fair review. When I saw the show in Chicago, I feared the worst, but it was so much better than I expected. My boyfriend and I had a great time.
I'll pass on this one but thanks for posting- curious about the show!

I want it to transfer to Broadway!!! Immediately
I would rather yank my own hair out and eat it.
My friend just saw it and told me that it's like watching the movie. For $120. AKA: So not worth it.
This is NOT like watching the movie....it is far far worse.
A total and complete rip-off.
I saw the NA Premire in here in Toronto. Personally, to me it was a let down. I thought it would have been more like a musical, but I was wrong. Interesting show, did enjoy it, althought, I'm not rushing to see it again.
I think having read comments by people on this board, my expectations were extremely low (like they are reading comments on every show), but I knew not to expect a traditional book musical. I honestly expected it to be awful (much like the horrible screen-to-stage version of Grease in London), but I was having too much fun to notice and the energy from the audience added to the experience.

Saw it in Chicago. Hated it. Not worth seeing and definitely not deserving of a Broadway house.

I saw it in Toronto as well and thought it was lazy. I'm not just talking the actors, I'm talking the production itself. It was definitely the worst thing I saw last year.
I reviewed it here. http://tapeworthy.blogspot.com/2009/01/dirty-like-poo-dirty-dancing-classic.html

I beg to differ. Worse shows that are far less entertaining open (and close) on Broadway every season. I mean, if the typical audiences throughout the tour, Australian, West End and German productions react the way they did when I saw the show, it's as "deserving" of a Broadway house as anything else.
Ah, the horrible comments make me all the more excited. I think i'm rushing tuesday.

Thank goodness they have student rush. Yet, I don't know if I am tempted to see it...
I just checked and rush isn't even available for all dates. Well, PASS!

Saw the show in Chicago and was horrified by it.
I had never seen the movie - gasp - so the "magic" (or lack thereof) was completely lost on me.
The continuously revolving images and sets made me ill and there are several performers who overact (a LOT!).
I even thought there could have been more dancing or at least the opportunity to watch the dancing without the ridiculous gray set spinning us into a nauseating whirlwind of flashing lights and images.
Honestly, one of the worst things I have ever seen on the stage.
Im sorry Mister Matt but i would rather sit through the dreadful Grease that's playing here in the West End (Though i think its far better than the clunky Broadway Revival) than sit through the horror that is Dirty Dancing again.
This show sells so well here in the West End yet im yet to meet anyone who liked it, its a cheap and badly acted straight translation of the film. It offers nothing new, has nothing more to say, most of the singing is on a click track and the staging is weak at best.
As many critics said in the UK, its a theatre event for people who don't normally go to the theatre, it was like theatre for the terminally stupid.
haha--it was better than Shrek.
I heard the show is selling very well in Boston. They had advanced student rush, but are supposed to be running day-of student rush for certain dates as well. I think that is probably how I will see it, but I am expecting nothing more than the movie on stage and some campy fun with a couple of friends, which can definitely be worth $25 :).
Well good or bad, the show IS coming to Broadway later this year and is exactly the kind of show that's going to survive in this market. A recognizable title to bring in the crowds with a story they already know by heart and feel safe spending their money on.
It was announced today that the Toronto production will close on March 29th. I wonder where the set will be going...hmmm
LOL. Well Hmmm.... I know of a currently vacant theatre where they could move that set to.....
Jordan...given your logic, you would think that Shrek would be raking in the bucks, but it is not.
It is DEFINITE that a bway transfer is imminent? (From what I've heard here in Boston, I sure hope not!)
Well SHREK is a MUCH more expensive show than DIRTY DANCING is. And SHREK is really a "kids" show. It's not the type of show that adult tourists or locals will mainly flock to alone without their kids so it makes it a very expensive evening out. I just think there are a lot of factors as to why DANCING will most probably do quite well coming in when it will.
And yes, it is definite.
