I saw this earlier. Wasn’t too surprising that most of them knew Newsies and no one knew Hello Dolly, though you’d think since they sing “Dolly” in the clip one of them might have at least guessed.
They clearly picked the wrong college kids! I m in college now and my theater loving friends and I would have known all of these in two seconds flat!I might not have known gentlemen prefer blondes though. I'm sure if you picked the theater college kids they would've had a much easier time. I do find it interesting that the black people know the wiz but the white people didn't .
Tom is hot a f. I'd love to introduce him to musicals, slowly. Among other things.
Still, I didn't think movie musicals from almost any era had a good reputation among theatre fans let alone the general public. I don't hold it against them.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Why would anyone expect random college kids to know musicals? I wouldn't be able to, for example, be able to identify most ballets or even cars, or athletes. Not my jam.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Yeah, if they'd been musical theatre students, that's another thing. Of course a handful of people aren't going to know a lot about a particular genre. And if they did, it wouldn't make for as entertaining a video.
"This thread reads like a series of White House memos." — Mister Matt
Well, to be fair the RENT score sounds more dated than Hello, Dolly!
