Just for fun: Who would you LOVE to see play Bert & Mary in Mary Poppins on Broadway? Let's think along the lines of *ALIVE* Broadway stars. Mine would have to be..
Fenchurch, you're right that Tommy Tune is too old. It would have been a perfect role for him, though, when he was in his 40's. As for the English accent, well, I don't know if he could have done it but he was so great that it would not have mattered that much.
Dick Van Dyke was freaking BRILLIANT as Bert in the movie. His accent may not have been spot on, but they couldn't have made a greater choice for someone to play Bert.
Honestly, I would LOVE to see Barry Humphries as Dame Edna as Mary Poppins. No joke. Or at least as Mrs. Brill.
Also, I'd love to see Christian Borle as Bert, and for Gavin Creel to play him on broadway, but we should be thankful to have the wonderful Gavin Lee here as Bert on broadway right now.

Can we keep Gavin Creel? You Americans really shouldn't have given him over so easily, we're ready to fight tooth and nail to keep him as our Bert. I don't have any particular thoughts on Mary as long as we have Gavin as Bert. ^_^

I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not...

I second Ruthie Henshall as Mary Poppins and Tim Howar as Bert. I would love to see the couple in something together. Didn't Tim say in an interview that he would love it if Mary Poppins went by their way?
Besides, Ruthie as Mary would be heaven!
"I haven't got a pail."
"Find your grail, your GRAIL!"
"But it's not missing. It's right on the counter where it's supposed to- defying gravity, my giant cup's gone!"
"Five hundred, twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes. How do you measure... measure a year?"
"How many times do I have to tell you, it's five hundred twenty-five thousand, five hundred and eighty-five point thirty-two minutes. You will never graduate if you keep basing your math on showtunes."
"You ruin Broadway for me."
"As well I should."
