Many divas have played the role of Rose but Elaine Paige has never had the chance to. I love her voice and think she will play a great Rose. What do you guys think of her in the role ???

STUPID ME!!!! I love Elaine, I love Gyspy why did I never think Elaine in Gypsy? I bet she would be really good. I can see her coming in after Patti if it lasts that long.

I doubt it'll last long for the simple fact we just had Gypsy on Broadway. People will see it just to see Lupone. I give it a year at best.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I think for the show to survive past LuPone and Benanti, they need to bring two top-notch actresses to replace them and invite the critics back.
Don't assume GYPSY is gonna do badly though, I didn't expect this, but the show has been in the high 80s for a few weeks already, has really strong worth of mouth, and according to Riedel has been taking in a lot in advances.

yes Gypsy, surprisingly (in a good way), is doing very solid business! But if LuPone was to be replaced, someone like Elaine Paige would not draw in a huge American audience. They need a bigger name to replace her. It would most likely have to be "stunt" cast to survive sans LuPone.

I'm not a very big Elaine Paige fan anyway.

Maybe Elaine Paige can take over the role in london after Patti leaves. Elaine has a very strong voice, I would love to hear her version of rose's turn or everythings coming up roses

If Laurents brought the revival to London I could see Paige returning in it. Though she'd be the same height as Baby June!

I think she should do it as Grizabella. I mean thats perfect, dried up old glamour Puss, forces her kids into the spotlight.

We all know that we just need to resurrect Judy Garland...even for one Night.

I love this idea!

The only problem is that if she did indeed replace Patti, or play it in London this quickly after Patti's version, then there really won't be a cast recording of it made (seeing as only Time/Life was willing to make Patti's version, and lately, if something plays here and there in short order, they decide that one cast album is enough (see "Hairspray")).

I would be spitting mad then. I would have to go over there with a recorder in hand (not that I condone bootlegging...)

Well, would Arthur Laurents even consider Betty Buckley as a replacement or....."when pigs fly"? from RC in Austin, Texas

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

Even though she says she will retire when she finishes in Vegas, I would like to see Bette Midler do it live. I think she would be the right replacement for LuPone.

THAT suggestion would be WONderful! Bette Midler as "Mama Rose" on Brodway would be the gayest thing in NYC since..... well, Liza's wedding with that Guest character. from RC in Austin, Texas

Good idea, but alas... La Midler is committed to Las Vegas for the next 2 years AND stated she's retiring after that. La Midler hasn't been on Broadway in a book show since 1969 (when she left Broadway's FIDDLER ON THE ROOF), and don't expect her to return in another one in this lifetime, unfortunately. re: Elaine Paige In Gypsy

She wouldn't sell ANY tickets, but I dream of seeing Donna Murphy as Rose! Maybe this could be her chance!

EP can sing...but she can't act. Her PIAF in the UK a few years ago was as undramatic as you can get.

Having seen Patti Lupone in Gypsy don't let Paige near it.

She cant act! I've seen every show she has done in the West End and she is very limited on the acting side.

A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!'' Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'

Sorry, but Murphy can act and sing circles around Elaine Paige.

Ray has a mini-orgasm...who am I kidding? Make that a big orgasm.
However, as I said in the other thread, Murphy deserves her own MURPHY GYPSY, not to be anyone's replacement at this point in her career.

Donna would be great. But MURPHY GYPSY would sound awful. It doesn't have the spark like LUPONE GYPSY or PATTI LUPONE GYPSY. Plus Murphy is such a common name. You say LuPone, and your average theatergoer/Broadway fan will know who it is.

Regarding Ray's post- I agree completely! I believe WickedBoy was talking about Paige not being able to act, not Murphy. If anyone ever sees Murphy in Passion, it is clear what an amazing actress she is.
edit. This is a bit off topic, but does anyone know how old Murphy is? Thanks.
