Elaine on her departure

It seems her health has been very poor lately

Posted: 3/21/13 at 12:36amI wish Elaine well, but this is truly a sad announcement. While she has worked long and hard, and entertained us all, New York won't be the same without her.

I am very sad about this as well. I'm so jealous of everyone who saw her in Little Night Music. They got to see one of the last true legends of the stage in her last Broadway show
(I know she had trouble remembering her lines n such, but Elaine Stritch at her worst is better then many actresses of today's best)
I hope the rumor that the Carlyle is kicking her out and she owes money isn't true.
I'm sure living in New York is tiring for her and she would like some peace in Michigan and will probably be very happy. but let's be honest. she's 88 and probably won't be back.

Totally agree, bigbelterbaby, Stritch is worth seeing no matter what. On her last TV appearance on Theatre Talk, yes, she had some trouble remembering things, but she was still totally on target and totally riveting. I remember watching her through the original run of COMPANY, and wondering if she could get through "Ladies Who Lunch," and although some times it was touch and go, she always did.
There is no one like her, and New York will be a poorer place without her.

Posted: 3/21/13 at 9:49amI'm sure the army of younger Elaine Stritch fans have already filled Play it Again's PM box. Provided we're talking "younger than 85."

(preferably someone younger)
Oh, that doesn't sound creepy AT ALL. If they're real young and offer you a glass of sweet tea, you better run.

Posted: 3/21/13 at 10:24amI'm not sure how to take that (preferably someone younger) part either. How old are you, PlayItAgain? Either you're looking for someone your own age to go or you're creepy.

Anyone make it to the opening of Elaine's new show tonight? What did she sing?
I hear it was quite the New York moment with everyone from Tony Bennett to Tom Hanks to Bernadette Peters to Liza Minnelli in attendance.
Glad New York is sending Stritch off in style.

I was there
let me say right up top, if your expecting her to sing for the entire show, reset your expectations, she sung 3 songs (one of which was a very funny riff on Cole Porters Your The Tops, the other two I don't quiet know what they were). But what she was, was very entertaining telling lots of stores and spending a good chunk of the beginning of the show somewhat hitting on Tom Hanks, her memory is definitely almost out the door which was kind of sad to watch, but the whole night ultimately felt kind of like your grandmother telling you stores of the old days. About Ethel and Judy and Sondheim and Hal Prince. Its a night I won't ever forget. And man the star power in that room, Liza, Bernadett, Michael Feinstein, Tony Bennet, Martin Short, Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks. Wow.

Posted: 4/3/13 at 6:27amSounds wonderful. According to the Carlyle, the bar is first come, first served, beginning at 6:30. Anyone know what time people start lining up for bar seating?

That sounds hot, PlayItAgain.
I hear it was pretty horrible. Unfortunately Stritchie can no longer remember words to songs, so she talked the whole time.
I imagine she's hopped up on opiates to deal with her various ailments. Poor thing.
