Wow, I'm really surprised that it's going to be animated. It'll be interesting to see what it will look like
I'm sure he won't, but Sir Elton himself would be an interesting Narrator, vocally. He has a very good storytelling instinct, which the past twenty years or so of his pop career built mostly on love songs has sort of hidden, but his Elton John Band-era material and demo recordings of his musicals show that he can really tell a story.

Now this show would work as an animated film. Totally unlike Cats.

This is a great idea!
I do hope they will be creative with the animation style though, not just copy the "3d, Tangled, Frozen" style where all the characters look like rubber dolls to me.
I hope they make it 2d, painterly, like the Tangled concept art. Maybe combined with 3d backgrounds.

Their last film was CG (Gnomeo and Juliet). I would expect the same from the production company.
with 3D animation being the big thing, no one is going to go back to 2D like they did with the Frog Princess.

I am talking about moving forward, not going back.
Because this:

Looks much more organic and beautiful to me than this:

To a certain extent, though, that visual style would dictate a certain tone and style in the material too... can you imagine the score to Frozen, and its style of humor, feeling at all appropriate to a film made in that Pre-Raphaelite visual style?

Yes I can.
I feel that the style of Tangled and Frozen is actually very distracting, because the texture of the eyes and skin looks too much like real materials such as rubber and plastic. Animation films should try to avoid that, because it will feel like we are watching moving dolls. There are other ways of portraying characters, such as the examples above.

I hope they all have dark skin.
The real question is will this movie have fuzzy, talking animal sidekicks with plush-toy merchandizing and lunch boxes?
... And of course, dream coats?
PRS, I'm sure if they'd had dark skin, Jesus would have said so in the original book.
Double post. But I'm right about Jesus.

"Like Paperman!"
Yes, that's an amazing style too. That would work better for Joseph than the "doll" approach.
Disney has claimed that Paperman's technology is simply still too expensive to use for a feature film, though they apparently are working away at making it easier. They also dropped the Tangled/Rapunzel concept because it, too, was too expensive right now. I can't see the Gnomeo and Juliette people wanting to make a film that cost over the $250 mill or whatever Tangled cost.
And let's not forget Dreamworks did a quickie (but not bad) spin off of Prince of Egypt on this, Joseph King of Dreams with songs by John Bucchino.

I'm not really interested in an animated Joseph, but if this is successful maybe Elton could do Aida next. That would be an interesting animated movie.
Would Disney let him? I assume they may still be holding on to it as a potential film sometime down the line.
Probably not, but I would assume that Elton has some kind of partial ownership of the property.
This should be interesting if they can pull it off. Are they going to base it on the original show or the tweaked version that played in the 1980s, with the Elvis Pharoah etc.?
As for a Cats movie, I don't see why they'd need one since a filmed version of the stage show exists already.

A filmed version of Joseph exists too
I am sure Elvis is in. Using any version before the 80s version would be a pretty short show, and miss moments that a fan would probably want to see. Will ALW/TR team up again for a new song to win an oscar? *coff*
Guys, let's not lean too heavily on Dave19's thoughts. He's also the guy who thinks Les Mis would have been better if it sounded like the stage version rather than adapting for film.
A filmed version of Joseph exists too <<
True, but I can see a film version of Joseph working a lot better than a film version of Cats, because Cats is so bound to the stage. It's dancers in cat costumes and while the dancing is amazing there isn't much of a plot. So are they going to show them as animated cats dancing? Or film actors in cat costumes, in which case it's pretty much the filmed version they already have? I don't think Cats can translate well to any visual medium other than the one we already have. I always thought they filmed the stage version because they gave up on the idea of doing a movie.
And yeah, a pre-80s version would be pretty short. Although the 80s version is short too, I remember seeing a touring version of it and it was so short that at they end they did a quick recap of the entire show, with shortened versions of all the songs, just to pad it out to an acceptable length for a live production. Fortunately it's the perfect length for an animated movie as they normally run about an hour and a half.
