Graham's misconceived Miss Adelaide was not only McAnuff's fault (though he is basically to blame for the entire thing, who knows if she'd have been tolerable in the Michael Grandage-directed production), she simply has no stage presence whatsoever and gets easily lost among the chorus girl. It didn't help that she had zero chemistry with Oliver Platt. Kate Jennings Grant had the same director and she stood out in every of her numbers. Perhaps Graham just needs more time on stage.

Maybe they can ship out the costumes for the Hollywood Bowl version this summer...

I was in town a few weeks back - I had no desire to see this show. It's a shame the London production from the Donmar Warehouse never made it over - it was fantastic.
Its sad to see any Broadway show close but I actually really enjoyed this show. Yes, it had flaws and I think direction and the fact it was under rehearsed where part of its biggest problems. But we chalk it up to experience and Lauren needs more time on stage...
The Donmar production was so vivid, I can close my eyes and see every minute of it. It was wonderful, even after cast replacements (yup, saw it again, thrice).
This production should never have happened. I somehow think the rights holders didn't want to share with the Brits, or something like that. They should have just brought over the original London cast and found a way to get Jane Krakowski freed up enough from 30 Rock, (which does film in New York) at least for the first three months.
And Oliver Platt is the glummest Gus I've ever seen on stage. Look at the attached photo. Would you really want to spend three hours with him?
Oh, and somebody said he and Lauren Graham don't come cheap. It would have helped if they had come with real musical theater talent included.
That's a shame. I actually somewhat enjoyed this production. I hope Lauren Graham returns to the stage again one day. And I hope Mary Testa gets in a new shows soon, in a bigger, better role.
I have a feeling the tour is going to go out non-eq. It'd save them a whole lot of lost money; then, they'll go to a mix of smalller cities and major cities for 1 night to 2 weeks. They'll fill up plenty of houses since the show is a big name, and the people they'll appeal to won't give a crap that it's non-eq... and the producers will make a crap load of money since the running costs of non-eq tours are so low. Mark my words.

I saw this show in April, and while it didn't blow my my mind, it wasn't the worst thing I'd seen either. I thought the cast did their best within the restrictions of their direction, and I thought that Lauren Graham was fantastic as Adelaide. The directors vision was the main problem, the cast seemed stuck in his narrow view of the piece.
I guess when they did not get the Best Revival tony, the die was cast.
I think they knew they wouldn't win anything. But a better performance could have spurred a rush of advanced ticket sales for the summer, which was probably the hope. Apparently this didn't happen.
"I just want a story and a few good songs that will take me away. I just want to be entertained. I mean, isn't that the point?"
I agree withthe comment that Ms. Graham had no stage presence at all. She took what is a scene stealing role and made it into a complete cypher. She should stick to movies and tv too. Updated On: 6/10/09 at 09:08 AM
and yes Broadway should have taken the UK Donmar production which was fantastic, much darker and simpler. The Revival just tried to throw as much color at the stage as possible, it made me sick lol
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna
Does anyone know if any promotional tracks were recorded? The only music, other than a [insert illegal Broadway media] available from this revival are the performances from the Tony Awards, the Tony Awards nomination(s) concert, and the commercial.
I second (or third) that, Yankeefan. Platt was great in Shining City. He just needs a role more suited for his talents because he's already proved he can be great on stage.
A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.
