Music icon Gloria Estefan has revealed that she is currently at work on a new original musical with her daughter, Emily Estefan

Estefan will pen the music and lyrics for the new show titled Five Notes, written by Karen Zacarías.

The show boasts a star-studded creative team including Tony-nominated director Michael Greif and multiple Tony-winner Alex Lacamoire stepping in as music director. Ken Cerniglia is the show's dramaturg.

According to a post on the star's Instagram, the show is inspired by the Orquesta De Reciclados De Cateura and based on the award winning documentary “Landfill Harmonic,” telling a story that celebrates the power of music, resilience and community.

The show will Estefan's first trip back to the musical stage after the success of her 2015 bio-musical On Your Feet! which explored the life and career of Gloria and her husband Emilio Estefan

Haven't heard any updates on this for a minute.

I decided to watch Landfill Harmonic yesterday and I can definitely see why it was seen as subject matter for a musical. I'm a little curious about how Estefan & team plan to execute it, however.  One of the most important parts of the story is how the instruments of the orchestra at its center are handmade from things found in a landfill - do they plan on using similar instruments for the show and having the actors play them live on stage a la Great Comet? I'm also curious how the narrative will handle some of the group's collaborations with well known musical groups (not going to name them for the sake of people who haven't seen the documentary)

Brody, we get it, you hate theater and are cheerleading the demise of every single production that gets announced. The bit is tired.

Jordan Catalano said: "Yep! That made me so happy because I loooooove Gloria. What title did you say you liked best from the choices it gave you? I said I liked "Five Notes" more than the others. But this excites me very much."

I had suggested Five Notes and Scrapyard Symphony, mostly because the alliteration rolls off the tongue better. Another I liked was Basura. But to be candid, I didn't care for any of the titles. As intriguing and evocative in language as Basura was (as someone of Latinx descent), it's like when they put the word Bad in front of Bad Cinderella. And I was direct about that in my responses in this survey that careful consideration needs to be made about anything suggesting the garbage, junk, scrap, trash, etc. even though, sure, it's an important aspect of the story, but they don't want to set themselves up for any play on the words from critics or audiences if the show ends up not being well-received.

Jordan Catalano said: "I said the EXACT same thing. Never ever put the word trash in your title or the word "Bad" unless it's about Michael Jackson. Those two words should be banned from broadway titles."

I think using the word RHYTHM (which people will associate with Gloria) in there could help. Something like Reborn Rhythms, or Rhythm Reborn, or Barrio Rhythms, or Rhythms and Rejects... or along these lines...

There almost seems to be a Catch-22 in terms of the title - if you choose a title that illuminates the subject matter (young people starting an Orchestra using handmade instruments made out of garbage from the landfill near where they live) it will almost inevitably sound "trashy" and might turn off audiences.  But if you go for one of the more abstract titles it doesn't tell you anything about the subject matter or the very real themes about the people involved that would otherwise have gotten people in the seats.

I found Reddit post about the survey and if I had to choose a title from the ones provided I'd go with either Landfill Harmonic (because it's the name of the documentary and at least has a marginal amount of brand recognition) or Scrapyard Symphony.

For the love of god, change that title. It's going to do nothing but make it a walking punchline long before the show sees an audience.

BASURA - Gloria Estefan new musical

I decided to check out some of the local reviews.

The AJC (paywalled) says it has "uplifting tunes and strong performances" despite "some imperfections"

Broadwayworld is very positive, calling it "stirring... vibrant, uplifting"

Arts ATL praises the cast, score, and direction but criticizes the book for its conventionally and lack of depth

Speakeysie is positive: "Basura leaves audiences with more than catchy melodies and memorable performances. It leaves us with hope. And these days, hope might be one of the most valuable things of all."
