To me, the production itself so far seems to be along the lines of 2007 revival from Kathleen Marshall. The look, tone, the fact that it's being catered more toward the film rather than the original script/score, which is how most revivals of the show are usually done these days anyway.

Oh yes, I agree it's totally a television adaptation of the film and not the original stage show. Could you imagine the outcry on social media if instead of "You're the One That I Want" they had the audacity to use "All Choked Up" instead?!! The internet would break.

In their defense I think they are implementing certain aspects from the original stage version. I've read that "Freddy, My Love" and "Those Magic Changes" as well as several other songs cut from the film version will be re-instated and sung by their original characters.
I'm not sure if they will be using "It's Raining on Prom Night" or "Shakin' At The High School Hop"
It's definitely the film. Keke Palmer had a snapchat video that showed the set for Beauty School Dropout and it's that all-white room like in the film, and they were working pyrotechnics for the Yhinder Road sequence from the looks of it. The set looked like a dark tunnel looking alley rather than the outdoor setting in the film.
Oh yes if the Thunder Road drag race is in this then it's most definitely the film all the way.
So if Boys II Men are playing 'Teen Angel' is 'Teen Angel' a 3-headed angel? How is that going to work? Shouldn't the casting announcement say they are playing Teen Angels?
I think the mentality to take is more of the 2007 revival, not more of the film. Because the 2007 revival included (what I think to be) the best standing version of the show. Meaning, it included the better songs from the movie, but kept the classic solid songs from the original. It would be interesting to see the original with no changes, but I don't even think they license that version anymore, and it would be so boring to see that played on television, in my opinion.
They/them.

I think they might do one member appears, another appears, and the last appears. Something like that would work, and could even be comical. Plus, it is a dream sequence.

Actually, barring some censored bits of language (the original versions of certain lines can be found here), the original version is still what's licensed by Samuel French. Check out the preview sample if you don't believe me.
Of course, that doesn't stop people from adding film material of their own volition...

I don't think they would even attempt to do the original stage version as written anyway. The film and the subsequent revivals that have preceded it have eclipsed that version. The only people who actually remember it are those that saw it in during it's original run in the '70s.
I certainly hope that they at least give some of the characters their original songs to sing or else talent like Kether Donahue, Keke Palmer and Jordan Fisher will just be heard in ensemble numbers, all their characters had solos and/or duets in the original show.
Also, since the film is so popular and iconic I don't think audiences would accept any other version than the film version, so the producers are playing it safe.
Paramount Television is the studio behind this live adaptation and they released the 1978 film.

Or anyone who performed in or saw a live production of the show not on Broadway/tour, considering that's the version currently being licensed.
FOX just released this "First Look" promo featuring interviews with Marc Platt, Julianne, Vanessa and Aaron. I'm not gonna lie, I am really looking forward to this -- much more than I was looking forward to The Wiz Live even thought I found it to be absolutely wonderful. I'm hopeful that this will be a fun, exciting production of a show I very much have an affection for.
