"Also, since the film is so popular and iconic I don't think audiences would accept any other version than the film version."
The Sound of Music Live! didn't shy away from presenting the original stage version although it was bound to surprise fans of the iconic film adaptation. For Grease I imagine they'll be using much of the School Version which does away with the raunchier language that isn't family friendly. And French doesn't license the movie songs because they never acquired those rights.
I don't think you know FOX as a network if you think they'll shy away from the raunchier side. I think that's why they picked it. It's family friendly while also being raunchy. Sorta like "Glee", in a sense.

I'd be surprised if they broadcast lyrics like "You know that ain't no sh!t, I'll be getting lots of tit..." and "She's a real **** wagon..." But I've been surprised before so...
I was reading an article which stated the producers are incorporating elements from both the 1972 stage version and the film to create a new version of this show.
Im wondering if they will re-instate some of the characters songs like Marty's "Freddy My Love", Putzie and Jan's "Mooning" and Doody's "Those Magic Changes".
I see they cast a fiery Latina as Cha Cha. It seems this is the way the role is now cast because of Annette Charles' portrayal in the 1978 film. In the original show Cha Cha is a chubby Italian girl.

Why though?
The thing is, besides being an utter toad of a human being, Riedel usually has the least knowledge of the topic in the room. He doesn't usually understand the content or approach of a show, and is always completely and unfailingly socially ignorant, which makes it really infuriating when Susan can't get a word in edgewise. A definitive mansplainer; it's always painful when he has female guests. I watch the show sporadically when I really want to see a guest, because it's the only theatre talkshow we have, but it would be so much better without this hateful clown in a dadcoat. I am extremely excited about seeing Grease Live on TV on 31 January... I saw this when it was in NYC a couple of years ago. It was a great show and I went with a bunch of friends of mine that day to see it. I wish that I could do it all over again. If only I won the lottery I would be rich and I would be able to see more of the shows in NYC... Maybe one day that could happen.....
I guess some people aren't into all of the LIVE shows on TV. Everyone has to put there two cents in even if they are not a fan of the show etc..... I am counting the days till this comes to television..... Once a grease chick always a grease chick...
Broadway.com did a set tour visit video for the production. Additionally, some of the sets they are using are also used by Freeform's TV show, Pretty Little Liars.
I wish they'd stop adding new songs to these things. Did we learn nothing from Peter Pan? Frenchie gets a song. It's just about her and sung to her and not sung by her. If the original creators were happy with that you'd think the rest of us could be.

I'm quite certain the original songs weren't the problem with "Peter Pan". In fact, 'Only Pretend' was one of the most exciting moments to me. But either way, it worked with "The Wiz". I've always felt Frenchy should have had a song. Something always seemed incomplete with her story.

I just hope people will start to realize why Grease is having a live audience and why The Wiz didn't. There are 35 sound stages and 14 exterior sets at Warner Bros Studios where Grease is performing. Grumman Studios, where The Wiz was performed, only has 6 sound stages and 30 acres of exterior sets. As a result, Grumman is considerably smaller than Warner Bros. Thus, a live audience with Grease is much more realistic.
