"Well, valid as something they need to work on, but you're specifically seeing something in progress when you go to a preview... the creative team is doing previews to hone the show. So, you have to accept you aren't seeing a finished product to some extent..."
I never said people should criticize it as if it were a final product, or that people should codemn the show for its length. All I said was that people were saying it was too long, therefore it's good that they are trimming it. You said it yourself, it's something they need to work on. I feel like you're sort of putting words in my mouth, unless my original post about the trimming had some implied meaning or tone which I didn't intend to convey.

I'm team Hamilton. Yay Hamilton! I think this show is totally, 150% different from anything out there right now, from the subject matter to the presentation of the material. If they're smart, they'll hold until reviews come out and then think very long and very hard about their next move. Fun Home is/was such a great and special show. With some nips, cuts and second thoughts on things, Hamilton will be. Don't short change either show or have them cancel each other out.
Hamilton is good (to me). If critics agree, it'll be good later this year or next year, too.
The Public Theater really needs to think hard on this if the rumors are true.

I mean, Lin Manuel even tweeted on Monday that he has 17 changes he needs to get into the show in the next two weeks, so that sort of makes it seem like they have a bunch of things they know about it and want to work through, to get the show into the shape they want.

There isn't much overlap in audiences other than theatre aficionados. Tourists aren't going to say, "We need to choose between one of these Public Theater transfers!"
I had heard, way back last spring following its workshop, Hamilton was Broadway tracked. Response from those at the workshop at been overwhelmingly positive- the "let me get out my checkbook, how much do you need?" kind of positive.
The Public can't commercially produce its transfers, at any rate- if commercial producers wish to spirit Hamilton to Broadway, they are totally able to, and if they have the money in place, why not?
This is not a Fun Home vs. Hamilton duel. The fact they both originated at the Public is irrelevant at this point.

Exactly, I have no idea why people are talking about it like they are in competition simply because they were both at the Public.

Could it really happen, or are the theatre gods (and the NY Post) just teasing us?
Let's pray it happens!

Otherwise, I have seen this at the Public 2 times and love it, would love for it to come to Broadway and sweep the awards! Interesting to see what will win for best musical if this does transfer.

For the Public, although it’s possible that they may not be financially invested in the Broadway runs of either, I would think it would still be to their benefit (if they have much say) on waiting to open “Hamilton” until next year. Say “Fun Home” wins the Best Musical Tony this year (or even just a bunch of them) and “Hamilton” does next year, the Public would then be able to lay claim to originally producing the winner of Best Musical two years in a row.
On another note, I’ve really been enjoying seeing the reaction to “Hamilton” (through Twitter) of Lin’s peers who have come to see the show:
Andrew Lloyd Webber: Just seen #Hamilton; it raises & changes the bar for musicals. Brilliant lyrics, staging, cast. Creator/lead @Lin_Manuel is special. ALW.
Josh Whedon: THIS IS AMAZING. @Lin_Manuel and his crew took it to another level SEE IT AND KNOW #NotThrowingAwayMySHOT
Sutton Foster: What an honor to live in the time of Lin-Manuel Miranda @Lin_Manuel #Hamilton
And, of course, Sondheim’s comments from the New Yorker article upon hearing some of the songs from the show:
“I was knocked out—I thought it was wonderful,” Sondheim says. “They seemed so fresh and meticulous and theatrical.”
It always makes ME excited to see what shows excite others in the industry.
