"OK, but is the advance higher than it cost to bring the show to Broadway?"
Yeah, I think it must be. I would guess it cost about 10-15 million.

Now if we can just get the audience to put off and put away their phones we would be all set.

re "hip hop," there is quite a bit of very legit hip hop in the show, not "Broadway-sounding 'hip hop'" or "hip-hop-ish." There are, however, a lot of non-hip hop songs in the show as well. I suspect the quotes that are referenced have more to do with the poster's subtle sneer at it.
re recoupment, the show has a moderate capitalization and a moderate nut. I would expect it will recoup fairly briskly, but yes it cannot actually recoup until it has banked the revenue. (Investors are not going to be paid back in accts receivable.)
I think the show will be historical in the Broadway (A Chorus Line) sense. I have no doubt about its longevity especially because, unlike BOM, it will be a magnet for school groups long after its must-see status has run ts course.

I am all for expanding the Broadway musical. Just wondering why a brilliant musical like Passing Strange didnt make it. Maybe it was too ahead of its time. Here's hoping The Total Bent fairs better. Saw the lab a few years ago and I am excited to see if it generates this kind of heat.

As to the advance..... remember that is gross, not net. We don't know how much over their nut that figure is for the same time period. Regardless, that figure is amazing.

My pictured response to such a wish:
"I am not/puttin' away my/phone!"

Michael Riedel was actually rooting for Passing Strange to beat In the Heights for Best Musical at the Tonys back in 2008, but that didn't happen. It was likely due to the fact that Passing Strange was doing so poorly at the box office, that Tony voters knew that giving it Best Musical wasn't going to make much of a difference.

I loved Passing Strange, but I think it lacked both the scope and the inventiveness of Hamilton. I also think Stew was his own worst enemy.

I will be there Saturday night! I am so excited. Seeing this at the Public was a real highlight for me--it's definitely in my top few favorite shows of all time.

What do you mean when you say Stew was his own worst enemy?

And more mind boggling, to me, is translating that to number of ticketed sold. Based on my quick (and often errant) math, some 160,000 - 190,000 tickets have already been sold!!
Can that be right?? Wow!!!

Posted: 7/13/15 at 1:04pmPassing Strange was far, far less accessible than In The Heights, or pretty much any Broadway musical one can name.

I've heard most of the score for Hamilton but have not seen the show, would any of you say Hamilton has any Book problems?

In that article listed above, it actually says that Hamilton sold over 200,000 tickets on a Broadway so far.

Well I've heard about 12 songs out of 34(?) So maybe using the word "most" was an overstatement.

re Stew, he had a way of saying and doing things off-stage that made people dislike him. One does not succeed very often by biting the hand that feeds you.
re the book of Hamilton, it is very strong, doing an incredible job of translating a 700+ page biography into a compelling piece of theatre, (Presumably it will be tweaked some from what we have seen but the book that won every award in sight off-B is not likely to be changed much.) To say that if you have heard most of the score you have heard most of the book betrays a misunderstanding of what a book is: one cannot hear a book. Also, of course, unless someone has seen the show it is highly unlikely they have heard much of the score, since there is no extant recording of it, and only a few songs or snippets have appeared outside of the performances. One cannot even remotely appreciate the magnificent accomplishment of this show without seeing it. I understand the predilection of some toward skepticism of hot things they have not seen, but I think it is fair to say they just haven't been enlightened. (And yes, there will be those who don't like it notwithstanding, but that is to be expected. We have had people post about their dislike of every acclaimed and beloved show that has ever played on a stage.)

Didn't read it, but anything is possible, I just did the math using an average ticket price of $150 to $175.

Yeah. Either way, I'm so happy it's doing so well. I didn't see it off-Broadway, but can't wait to see it now.

That's how I read it as well. Those who fancy themselves discerning theatre elites for some reason seem to look down on rap and hip-hop as though they're somehow less legitimate, or artistic, genres of music. Hm, I wonder why that could be...
Anyway, best to the cast and crew, tonight they'll make history! Wish I could be there.

I hope its not like Heights and only run for 3-4 years. But something in me tells me that after the original cast leaves it'll be one of those shows that'll start bringing in celebrities to raise sales. But we'll see. Wicked did fine after the original cast left and has yet in 12 years casted a huge known celebrity. I hope it run for a very long time though.

This show has nothing to do with the cast. It doesn't have any big names now, it won't need any in the future.
