Do you mean Side Show? It's about real life siamese twins Daisy and Violet. Some like it, some hate it. I love it.

I've heard of it, but I don't really know much about it. I have heard one song from it, and it was gorgeous. It flopped on Broadway, though.

Not only have I heard of it, it's a personal favorite of mine. It closed after a short while on Broadway, but there are local productions popping up across the USA and England from time to time.

Follow the link for a little more information, and some pictures.

My grandma (she used to be a Carnie) knew Daisy and Violet. I've got pictures of them around here somewhere in one of these old photoalbums. Heh. re: Has Anyone Heard Of Sideshow

HEARD of it?? Honey, you're posting at BroadwayWorld.com. Duh! It's like going into a movie theatre and asking "Has anyone heard of a movie called Star Wars?"

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. CapnHook - Honey, you're comparing Side Show to Star Wars?? A musical theatre flop with a minor cult following to an international blockbuster mega-hit Hollywood movie? Kind of a poor analogy, don't you think? The show flopped eight years ago, so it is conceivable that there are new musical theatre enthusiasts our there not familiar with it. Duh!

Star Wars is the single most successful film series in history. It has sold well over a Billion dollars in tickets, plus probably twice that in DVDs and licensed merchandise. It is a pop culture phenomenon. The only possible comparison in the world of musicals might be Cats, or perhaps The Sound of Music, both phenomenons in their own arena, but much less well known than "Star Wars."

"Side Show" was a flop musical, infrequently performed since it's limited run. The Cast Recording sold less than 10,000 copies.

If you'd like to compare "Side Show" to it's filmic equivilent, might I suggest "Zapped"?

Yes, that works quite nicely.

You missed the point. I'm not comparing SIDE SHOW to STAR WARS. I'm comparing going to a movie theatre and asking if anyone has heard of "Star Wars" to going onto BroadwayWorld.com and asking if anyone has heard of "Side Show."

Of course people in the movie theatre heard of "Star Wars."

Of course people on BroadwayWorld.com heard of "Side Show."

A show that concludes with Siamese Twins singing "I Will Never Leave You" to each other borders very seriously on kitsch.

You shouldn't have taken it literally. Two people who are close to each other can leave it each other mentally, and when it happens it's not pretty.

Saw it on Broadway -- liked it. The cast recording is hit or miss, with, for me, the standout being not the twins, but Norm Lewis as Jake -- You Should Be Loved is one of my favorite songs.

My favorite story about Side Show was how so many people kept wondering what "mechanism" kept Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner "glued" together in the show. The two ladies simply stood next to each other. Their acting was so good that audiences thought that there was a mechanism that kept them attached...

"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"

I loved this show more before performing in it. I was one of the carnies.

The actual show is mostly sung-through with the exception of maybe 10 spoken lines. The songs on the recording are the best selections of that music, but there is a lot more music that was not recorded. A good 40 minutes or so. I can see why it wasn't recorded. There are some short song passages that have nice melodies, but most of the non-recorded "songs" are somewhat bland. The CD is a good collection of the best of the show's music, but if we're going to be honest, it is a highlights recording.

It's still great. Go see it.

Mr. Roxy, once again, I agree with you (or, more to the point, I should say, "My husband and I agree with you and your wife.")

"Side Show" is so good, it's hard to imagine its being a flop. We still can't figure it out.

The CD is wonderful. Alice Ripley AND Emily Skinner...plus Jeff McCarthy pre-Urinetown! (As well as the aforementioned Norm Lewis.) You can't go wrong.

An undeserved flop, definitely. I think the subject matter was off-putting to a lot of people (myself included, initially) but if you can get past the opening scene (a 15-minute introduction to all the "freaks") it is a very engaging piece. I was in a regional production of this show a few years ago and it was one of the best theatre experiences I've had.

I had tickets to see this show-----it closed the day before!!! What a disappointment! I bought the CD and still listen to it--From what I read on message boards, etc., it seems as if the cast was pretty close. One of the girls' mother kept posting (I don't remember which one). I think maybe the subject matter was just too questionable for some people. They didn't look into it enough to realize it was about emotions rather than just physical appearance. (imo)
