SACRAMENTO  A group notorious for picketing various political events tied with the gay community as well as the funerals of deceased American soldiers will be making a pit stop in Sacramento and Davis this week.The Westboro Baptist Church, which runs the websites GodHatesFags.com, will protest at two Sacramento high schools  Rosemont High and McClatchy High  as well as several Jewish places of worship and the Sacramento Community Theatres showing of the Broadway musical Rent on February 5th.

Some very clever people started the following site, which lists the places these repulsive people will be picketing - and uses their presence as a fund-raising opportunity for the very groups/people being targeted:

From what I understand, they then follow up with a letter to Phelps and his demon pack, thanking them (for example) for helping to raise $$$$ for the Gay-Straight Student Alliance!

It baffles me that these people think that God(if there is one, who am I to say) would approve of this hateful behavior. Doesn't God love all of his creatures regaurdless of sins according to the bible? Ugh these people are insane and have no grasp on how hateful they are actual being. I am throughly disgusted. These people will certainly be going to Hell if it exists. Human nature annoys me.

Notice that almost whenever there is a "hate group" talked about in the media protesting almost anything, it is the tiny, barely existent, and LOUD Westoboro Baptist Church. The Phelpses and company get headlines because they are so ridiculous and so out of touch. They have no clout. They are changing no minds, except maybe in the other direction. They are grotesque and fascinating. But the best thing to do, for our culture, is to ignore them.

They were protesting at alot of locations throughout the Bay Area last week. Theaterwise, they were protesting outside of high schools that were putting on productions of RENT and outside the theater where the tour of Fiddler is running.

Great. Only in Sacramento. We see these people at EVERY rainbow festival and at every gay pride parade. Luckily, they stay away from the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival but I think that's because they don't know it exists.

Is anyone really shocked that these people are protesting Rent? I mean I know that what they do is bad and I am convinced that these guys area all walking evil. But, we do know what they believe and we do know what kind of events that they protest against so it would shock me to hear that they are protesting Rent.

These guys were in my town the week between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, even protested in front of the Temple where I had my Bar Mitzvah. Sure, there were counter protests, but, for the most part everyone just took it all with a grain of salt and ignored them and didn't give them the satisfaction of attention. I think that that is what is going to happen in California.

Hell, this is a group that protests stores that sell Swedish vacuum cleaners. I think that if they are group that does that then all bets are off as to what they will picket against next.

I don't pray, but I'd make an exception to pray for an especially painful form of cancer (or other sometimes deadly ailment) to afflict Phelps and his followers. They're wasting oxygen other sane people could be using, and as they expend sooooo much energy on hate and misery, they should just die slow, painful deaths.
