I really hope all of those fools are reading this thread! Chris Sieber definitely lost some fans. And I don't think Hunter Foster, Jen Cody, or Natascia Diaz had that many to begin with!
Okay, everyone is entitled to their opinion, so here is mine. First and foremost, people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. The commenters on this board are just as bad as the ones in Hunter’s group so get off it and change the channel already. People can say what they want to say.
Now, I can see both sides of the fence on this issue and everyone makes some form of a valid point. I like Green Day as much as the next person (though I don’t care for the American Idiot musical) but three Green Day songs in a row at the opening of the Tonys? Like Nell Carter said, “Gimmie a break!” I don’t mind film actors appearing on Broadway -- welcome to the theater, but that Green Day performance(s) I could’ve lived without.
I feel a little biased because some actors I’ll take on Broadway over others, but it does seem a little arrogant for a person to say/think, “I took a few months off of filming in Hollywood to come here and possibly win/get nominated for this award.” On one level their presence brings a certain recognition to Broadway. Then again sometimes (as evidenced by this years ratings dip) people don’t care. It’s just sad because some people in New York literally work their a**es off for years just to make it into the chorus of a show and then some actor from Hollywood comes in and automatically get a role. It’s unfair but hey, that’s how it is and I didn’t write the rules.
As per CZJ. I love her. That performance may have not been her best, but everyone has an “off” night, I still believe that she is a good actress/singer. However, I thought (and I’m sure CZJ did too) that Montego was going to win. I still think that Montego should’ve won. Nevertheless CZJ came to Broadway and worked her ass off. She worked with Broadway Cares and appeared at pretty much every function she was asked to so I give her her props, and though I believe that Montego should’ve won I do not think that CZJ was undeserving of the award. This whole Broadway vs Hollywood thing is as old as dirt so this us vs them mentality will never go away.
How are commenters on this board just as bad as the ones in Hunter's group? No one here is saying anything nearly as one sided and ridiculous. Change what channel? Because most of us don't agree with you? I'm not certain of your point there.
"If you are going to do something, do it well. And leave something witchy."-Charlie Manson
You're right. It will never go away as long as whiney babies like Hunter, Jen, Chris and Natascia keep stomping their feet and making fools of themselves over this crap.
"It’s just sad because some people in New York literally work their a**es off for years just to make it into the chorus of a show and then some actor from Hollywood comes in and automatically get a role. It’s unfair but hey, that’s how it is and I didn’t write the rules. "
What about actors from Hollywood that also have worked their butts off? What about stage actors who do get a break quickly in their career? Everyone has their path.
@munk--to be fair, there's been quite a bit of nastiness in this thread.
Actually, it seems to me it's always the Broadway folks kvetching about how catty and bitch everyone here is - and then it turns out that Star magazine is right - (Sort of) "Stars" - They are just like us!
Also - unless there are bunch of assless chorus boys and girls out there - they don't literally work their assess off. Updated On: 6/17/10 at 08:56 PM
“change the channel” is just an expression. In the same vein of lets just move on. People do not have to agree with me. The fact that people have varying view points makes a discussion interesting. Also, the only thing I said close to disparaging that I said was that the I didn’t like AI, I thought that Green Day shouldn’t have performed three songs and that although I thought that Montego should’ve won I do not think that CZJ was undeserving of the award. No one is the thread maybe saying anything truly vicious, but I have seen in some other posts commenters make some pretty rude and/or nasty comments towards other Broadway actors. Though, I must admit no one has anything on the people over at “All That Chat."
You’re right. Everyone does have their own path that’s why I said, “It’s unfair but hey, that’s how it is and I didn’t write the rules.”
There are actors from Hollywood that also have worked their butts off and stage actors who do get a break quickly in their career. My statement was a generalization, if I got into it it would probably be a bigger diatribe than before. But, sometimes it feel like some Hollywood actors come over, do Broadway and don’t take it that seriously. Whereas many Broadway actors take Broadway very seriously.
Makes you wonder when all the Hollywood stars thank the Broadway community for "welcoming them with open arms".
Not to bring up this case again, but Jeremy Piven once said something along the lines of not believing the Broadway community being as petty as Hollywood. Maybe he had a point.
"But, sometimes it feel like some Hollywood actors come over, do Broadway and don’t take it that seriously. Whereas many Broadway actors take Broadway very seriously."
Well, none of us can control that--and it has little to do with the Tony Awards show. We can't predict which Hollywood actors will take their stage time seriously. We can't predict which Broadway actors don't--and trust me there are plenty of Broadway actors who don't take the work seriously. Broadway can be just as shallow as Hollywood is presumed to be.
So, what IS that group about? I joined it early today because I thought that group was started with sincere intentions.
I heard about plenty of screwing around on both coasts. I don’t prefer one over the other. I enjoy films a much as Broadway (though I would never move to Cali.) and I am quite aware that no one can control who is going to take their craft seriously and who is not. As previously stated the only thing I’m a little biased against/about are certain actors taking to the Broadway stage. But those are actors and opinions I’ll keep to myself. No one is perfect, everyone fails or screws up from time to time but as I also stated earlier
“This whole Broadway vs Hollywood thing is as old as dirt so this us vs them mentality will never go away.”
So no matter what we write and/or think about on this board or what we piss and moan about things are what they are and at the end of the day everyone will have their own opinions. Also, I’m sure there a plenty of people who agree with you and thought that Hunter’s group was started with sincere intentions. Maybe it was maybe it wasn’t that’s for you to decide...or ask Hunter nevertheless, I think it’s just a channel for people to vent through, kind of like this.
No. That group is about taking action. So what actions? With what intentions?
Because if that group is about fighting a CBS version of the Tonys, I support that. If it's about making sure the creative awards are honored along with the rest of the awards, I support that.
But, if it's because CZJ dared to do Broadway and win a Tony, I can not support that.
Let's also note that the former items ARE about the Tony Awards show. The latter is not. And not likely actionable.
“So, what IS that group about? I joined it early today because I thought that group was started with sincere intentions.”
Thus, I gave you my opinion. The group itself states that it is:
“A group for all actors, directors, writers and fans who want to see the Tony awards celebrate the excellence of Broadway by allowing those artists who have made theatre their livelihood to take a more active part in its yearly presentation.
We want the evening to be about Broadway and for the fans of Broadway. This group is about including more of those artists that we admire and look up to, so that it truly becomes an evening to celebrate.”
It all boils down to opinions what some people might think in that group is not what others might think. Some people are against a CBS version of the Tonys, others have other intentions and yet, people on both boards (here and there) are getting worked up over this.
