I think they got Prima Donna right. It was the only song I thought was adapted well.
I really disliked the film version of Rent, but I think they got Light My Candle right.
Anyone else have examples of musical movie versions that stunk but got one song transfer right?

That's funny - I liked the Rent movie overall, but one of the songs on film I really disliked was Light My Candle. I thought Dawson wasn't in-your-face flirtatious enough and Pascal was far too timid.
Annie is a guilty pleasure of mine - I hated the original film, but I loved Burnett's "Little Girls." Spot on.
Damn Yankees - Shoeless Joe
Heart
Two Lost Souls
Steam Heat
The only song I thought they got right in the film RENT was Without You.
I hated the RENT film and without a doubt my least favorite song was WITHOUT YOU.
Also from ANNIE, I loved the addition of "DUMB DOG" AND "SANDY". Those little girls are such great vocalists in that song.

I thought Out Tonight was done very well in the Rent film. Not a HUGE fan of Rent, but I really liked Dawson's singing and she had some great energy.
Call me crazy. I LOVED the film version of "The Producers." Thought it was fantastic. Was so disappointed when it failed at the box office.
The film version of "Phantom Of The Opera" was visually stunning! The opening sequence of the Paris Opera House going back in time was unbelieveable!
Didn't see "Rent" as it didn't play very long at the theatres.

I hated in the Tv movie Version of Annie, I hated how they changed sophie to a corn seller I think it was, and how Daddy Warbucks and Grace plan to get married. That isn't supposed to happen until Annie Warbucks. I did love the addition of Grace singing a reprise of Maybe. I thought that was gorgeous.

You know that you can rent the dvd, right?
I am also a big fan of how they staged "Out Tonight" Dawson was Hot!

Neal = crazy!
Having just watched Sweeney Todd and Sunday in the Park with George, I really had to wonder why they didn't just film The Producers in the St James in front of an audience. It actually probably would have been better than what we would up with.
Not a huge fan of the Rent movie, but Tango Maureen was impressively staged, as was the title number. I asked for the DVD (I wasnt gonna spend my own $ on it LOL) for those 2 reasons.
Also: The movie version of Annie has always perplexed me. I cant understand why the filmmakers removed (or severely cut down) arguably some of the best songs in the show (Easy Street, NYC) and replaced them with crap songs like Lets Go the Movies and We Got Annie!
I totally agree with you, the only part of the POTO movie i can stand to watch is Primadonna right through to Buquet's death.
as for rent (and chicago) i prefer the movies by far to the stage show, but thats probably because i dont really like the stage versions of those 2, so it is a personal bias.
Best song in RENT was "Goodbye Love" AND THEY CUT IT!!
That scene was so powerful.
I think they should've left "Me And My Baby" in the film version of CHICAGO, as it is sung by Roxie and could've worked as a fantasy sequence. Personally, I think the second half of the movie was too rushed. Don't even get me started on the finale -- what an anticlimactic ending when compared to the brilliance of the opening song. At least in the movie they explained how Velma got off.
I hated the film version of A Chorus Line, but I thought they captured At The Ballet very well.
I hated the film version of Mame, and I don't think they did anything particularly well.
RENT - I'll Cover You (Reprise) & Without You (But just the Angel/Collins film clip part), had me in tears. I still can't watch it and not cry. I thought that was done well. I HATED "Out Tonight", not just because I did not like Rosario as Mimi (Like her but not in the part), but the whole thing was terrible. Tango Maureen & Will I were done well, and I really wished they had left Halloween & Goodbye Love in the movie.
Producers - Loved it. I am not a Will Ferrell fan at all, but I loved him in this movie. I was laughing through the whole thing.
Just my thoughts.
I loved the way they did 'Tango Maureen' in Rent. I didn't like they way they did 'Out Tonight' just because the Cat Scratch Club is not supposed to be business suit attire. It's kind of a whole in wall strip club.
For what it's worth, my friend Miss Penneywise and I each have The Producer's DVD. Both of us enjoyed parts of it but we were basically disappointed.
Then last July we were sitting in her TV room with the big screen TV on and the Producers DVD playing. Her kids were also there with us and we started laughing at the very beginning and were in hysterics through the whole movie. That's when we realized the missing factor with the movie was the LIVE AUDIENCE. We had a live audience there to react to the various lines and scenes and it brought the show back to life. It was really terrific!

I hated pretty much all of POTO the movie. I started to enjoy Patrick Wilson's performance of All I Ask Of You, and then they kept cutting away to shots of statues and the Phantom hiding behind them. They did the same thing in Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again. There's Emmy Rossum singing very prettily, and they keep cutting away to shots of statues. What a bore.
RENT was pretty well disastrous all around. When Collins decides to escape a group of muggers by running into a dark alley, I knew the movie was going to suck. I liked Out Tonight, mainly because of Dawson's performance, but agree that the Cat Scratch Club set was way too posh.
I think that CHICAGO is easily the worst major studio release ever made, but I did kind of like what they did with the song Roxie. I liked Renee and the mirrors.

Really? I mean, I understand the film has its detractors, but really? The worst ever?

I hated the film version of POTO but...
...that Jennifer Ellison chick sure has some nice breasts.
I think they got the majority of Rent right on film
I loved the visual on the "No Day but today" with Roger on the Fire escape and Mark, collins and Mimi on the street.
The one part I hated was what I call "The Roger as Bon Jovi" sewuence during "What You Own". Him standing on the rock in the desert is crazy.
Also crossing the 59th st bridge on the way back from New Mexico is a little strange. That bus driver needs an onstar!
Thats funny, I didn't call it Roger as Bon Jovi, but Roger as Brintey Spears in the "Not a Girl, not yet a woman" video! but the hair is right on w/ Bon Jovi.
