Hey, I just ot the Into the Woods DVD from my library, and I love it. But anyway, my question is, which cast recording is better? The OBC or the revival?
The OBC! The only thing the revival has going for it in my opinion is Laura Benanti as Cinderella. Other than that though the OBC is a million and one times better.
Yes. I'd agree that the OBC is much better. (plus Bernadette is on there)
Another vote for OBC
Get the OBC. It is great. A remaster is on the way but keeps being delayed.
I loath the Revival. THere are some who love it like their own child, but I can't stand it. There are some odd lyric changes (I hate the changes to Last Midnight) and some of the cast is awful. Vanessa Williams, who I love on the SPider Woman cd, is awful here.
I'm probably alone here, but I really like the OLC. Maybe not above the OBC, but it runs pretty close (maybe it helps that that's the production I saw), and with a cast of actor-singers, it has a greater sense of theatricality than the original cast. And the orchestrations seem just that little bit clearer and crisper as well...
I too despised the Revival recording. The OBC is the only way to go.
OBC. As someone else said, the only thing the revival has going for it is Laura Benanti.
Also, though this isn't about the cast recording specifically, here is a recent thread about the two productions that you might find helpful:

I reccomend the OBC, I apologize in advance for Chip Zein's AWFUL performance.
Bernadette (Obc) vs Vanessa Williams (Revival) What do you think?
I personally don't think you'll have any problems with Chip Zien's performance either. I think he's fine on the recording.
Another solution would be to get the London Cast Recording and buy the wonderful Into the Woods DVD of the OBC:

True, Chip Zien is awful. And I don't particularly like Danielle Ferland, but she's a lot better than Molly Ephraim.
OBC -run FAR AWAY from the revival. Vanessa Williams hurts me inside.
And I know you didn't ask this... but I totally recommend the Godspell revival over the original.
My first intro to ITW was the revival recording and I love it. I like Vanessa Williams alot more than I thought I would and I adore Laura Benanti. That being said, I watch the OBC dvd freakishly often. I'm listening to the revival right now and am going to watch the dvd in a few. I've been waiting far too long for the remastered OBC recording. Feb. 14th. Argh!! Buy both!

I love the OBC, esp. Danielle Ferland. Joanna Gleason and Bernadette Peters make this a must buy!
OBC hands down. I don't know what the actress who's playing the Baker's Wife on the new recording thinks she is doing, but it isn't right. I can't stand her. I don't remember her name, but she was pretty awful.
Plus, Bernadette is on the OBC. Thats reason enough to buy it.
Thanks you! I have gotten the OBC vdieo from my library, and I love it, and I think I will get the OBC CD.
BTW, I liked Chip Zien's performance.
Kerry O'Malley played the Baker's Wife in the revival. I didn't see the revival so I can't judge her performance but I think her voice is pretty. I love her "it justifies the bean!" Still listening to the revival.

broadwaybetty best me to it.
Even though I love both recordings (I think Williams is alright...), I'd recommend the OBC. Bernie, Gleason, and the orchestrations make it a must-buy. =)
OBC no doubt!!!!!
