The convention is good for the city economically.

What?? What are you talking about? The convention is AWFUL economically for the city. The city isn't make one net dime from this convention. I won't go into it, but this has been extensively explained in all the NYC newspapers. It's yet another reason why New Yorkers are mad that the convention is being held in NYC.

We should pray for a Republican convention every week.

You mean we should pray for a huge tidal wave to wash the convention away.

just curious. are you american?

blue, are you here in nyc? or are you just wishing from afar for that tidal wave that would basically have to wipe out the entirety of manhattan south of the garden to even get to the gop. thus with the momentum it would require to actually do any damage at the range it would be necessity carry beyond the garden and wipe out the city probably up to about 46th, which in case you're wondering would take a lot of broadway theatres out. why do you hate nyc so much, blue, to wish such a misfortune on so many here?

Yes I'm american my grammar just sucks. The problem is I am a very passionate person, and when I get excited about something my grammar gets even worse!
Oh and I did spell/grammer check my post in word and according to word there were no grammer issues.

I'm actually a grad student working on my phd! Imagine how many times I (or someone else) is going to have to read my thesis to get the gramatical mistakes out?

"There is a group of Equity members, though, who have decided to donate their performance pay for Sunday's GOP show to the Kerry campaign!"

That'd be fine if Kerry could accept contributions. He's limited to government funds, as of his acceptance speech at his convention.

LOL, papa, I meant that stupid island the GOP is using. I don't mind Madison Square Garden (but the architecture is horrendous, especially if you've seen what the Garden used to look like....damn modern office towers...).

umgeoboy, I don't want to question you, but I find it hard to believe you're doing your Ph.D studies (unless it's in science). How did you get through your undergraduate courses and get into a graudate program if you can't write? Academia would crucify you.

Kerry can accept contributions because he is not accepting any matching funds from the federal gov.--neither is GW--he is using his "own" money to finance his campaign. But you can always give to Moveon.org as well

lildogs, what planet are ya on there? both kerry and bush accepted matching funds awhile ago. did you miss that whole debate in july about how kerry would be hamstrung during the month of august because gw would have a whole month to spend like a drunken sailor while kerry would be already working on the $75 million in allotted federal funds?

Yes, I am doing my phd in sciences. And yes I can actually write when I try to. I actually had no problem getting through college and graduated from a very good school with honors. And now I am in one of the best grad schools in the country for my specific program.

There I went back and corrected my post. I didn't realise how little it made sense until I reread it.

Honey, if you want to bother- or if you read the thread at all, read this again:

You might receive some explanation. Or just go around thinking that they eliminated every show that said "sh*t"- just because.

My friend worked for the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce. She is of part Blackfoot and Cherokee decent. The Cleveland Indians baseball team has a logo that many consider to be a racist charicature, but part of her job was to attend events involving the Indians and wear an Indians jersey or hat. She would wear a jersey, but with a patch over the logo that she considered offensive. Her employers understood that she did not want to be forced to do something that she found offensive as part of her job.

They're not forcing actors to say "We love Republicans!" at curtain call. Or to wear RNC pins, or to shout anti-Kerry slogans outside the theater. They just want them to do their jobs for paying customers. (Not paying so much, but still.)

There are other and better ways to protest, anyway. If you have time, join a march. If you don't have time, donate money. If you don't have money or time, at the very least urge people you know to go out and vote for Kerry. Voter turnout is going to be a huge factor in this election. Not performing for the Republicans? That isn't going to do **** to affect the result of this election, and that's what really matters.

Plum, I heartily agree.

I am all for speaking your mind and using your first amendment rights but not working on the day they show up at your performance is not really accomplishing anything.

Go protest or donate and be done with it. There is nothing in the Bill of Rights that says you don't have to work if you want to make a 'statement' If the job you are doing is a job that requires you to do something to which you object, you need to get another job.

Kerry can no longer accept donations to his campaign, all donations must go to the DNC. Bush can accept donations up to the day he accepts the nomination (I believe Thursday?) After that - he will only be able to accept donations to the RNC. It doesn't really matter, both parties are spending like hell on the presidential race.

Come on, "sick days" have been used as a form of protest for years by the labor movement.

Oh you poor New Yorkers. Come to DC where we get the Republicans every day of the year! Only YOU can help us fix that problem! (only if you're over 18, that is...)

As for the shows, the convention is using the Bway tickets as entertainment. It shouldn't be news to anyone around that the party does not find much outside of the realm of upper class christians to be very entertaining. What they're going to see might not be bad theatre, but it will be bland theatre, dears, because in general (other than the potty mouth of the VP) the party in power is quite bland.

I wish I could be in NYC to support the shows that say something this week, but I'm going to enjoy DC without the Republicans!

RyanDavis: Typically 'sick outs' are used to protest policies of the employer not the government.

If you are an actor working on Broadway today you are performing for republicans every night. You don't get to choose for whom you perform.

I repeat, if you want to do something, join a protest on your own time or give money to an organization that supports your causes or to a candidate. You CAN contribute private donations. None of us is so wealthy as to exceed the maximum allowed, I'm sure.

And there were protesters yelling and singing at the delegates outside the theaters anyway. Well, the Majestic at least.

*evil cackle*

I only wish I could be there myself. But at least down here in PA I'll be helping the state swing the right way.

If I ran the world (or owned the New York Times) those Republicans would be seeing the following shows, and here are some funny after-the-show quotes:

AVENUE Q

"Puppets having sex? A gay Republican investment banker? A swipe at our beloved President?!? ARRGH! Time for a good old Kulturkampf!"

WICKED

"Were they making fun of our beloved Gipper and Karl Rove in the SAME SHOW??"

[What I just said could have me banned from All That Chat...God bless you, Broadwayworld, for upholding the 1st amendment!]

RENT

"Multiculturalism?!? Cross-dressing?!? AIDS?!? No! No!!! That doesn't exist!!"
--some Republican plugging their ears shut, proceeding to chant 'la la la la la'

THE PRODUCERS

"They just turned our beloved President's number-one influence into a flaming homo!!!"

CAROLINE, OR CHANGE

"Honey, when we get home, make sure our son isn't giving his spare change to the cleaning lady."

ASSASSINS

"Can't-- breathe-- LONG LIVE THE FÜHRER!!"
--some Republican as he dies of a coronary outside the theatre

HAIRSPRAY

"Those pesky civil rights... We're having fun getting rid of them, aren't we?"

#48The Dear Old GOP
Posted: 8/29/04 at 11:26pm

I'm sure a lot of Republicans will be enjoying shows other than the ones that were approved by the Party. Not all Republicans are uptight a%#holes. I encourage and welcome healthy debate and criticism, but the ugliness of both sides is beneath us as educated Americans.

As for the hecklers to the Broadway crowds, I hope the NYPD gives everyone of them a good a%$ kickin'. I'm sorry, it's just beyond rude and a despicable way to treat guests of our city no matter what their political persuasion. The hecklers are assuming that everyone attending the theatre are republicans? They need to get a clue, get an education, get a few years behind them and try and do something more constructive.

Argh, SuperSchubert, you just hit two of my pet peeves. What we post here has NOTHING to do with the First Amendment. NOTHING. The First Amendment says that the government can't abridge our right to free speech, among other things. The mods of ATC aren't government officials. They own the website and they can control content as they please.

And please, PLEASE don't compare Bush to Hitler. Not only are you invoking Godwin's Law (thread over, you lose), the comparison is invalid. And it's also a bit insulting to those of us with relatives who were victims of the Holocaust.

*deep breath*

Okay. On with the thread. Updated On: 8/29/04 at 11:41 PM
