Seriously, I do not get why people are having trouble imagining a beautiful 60 year old woman as glamorous, mind you glamorous. And if people are going back to the original book, the problem can be solved by simply removing the word "young," mind you, "young" and "youthful" are also two completely different words. Ah, whatever, everyone has a right to their opinion, and actually this kind of "beautiful" conception has followed Streep throughout her entire career (there's the famous story of Dino DeLaurentiis calling her "ugly" in Italian thinking she wouldn't understand what he was saying).
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
She will look fine, it's a movie. They can do anything. All I said was - she's not as obvious/outward of a beauty as someone like CZJ or Vanessa Williams. I never said they won't make her look good.
Meryl is ugly and totally wrong for the part. As always.
Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiae
Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra
Salve, Salve Regina
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Eva
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
O clemens O pia
The ones who have the most problems with her age and looks are the ones who will have the most problems with their own age and looks and ideas about "beauty."
Get ready.

Besty, I'd like to call it a curse in terms of karma to keep the thread very themed I still don't get how people think Meryl needs to be touched up to be beautiful, but whatever, I don't think any of us are gonna change our opinions.

Meryl will look great as the Witch...iam just thankful that Jim Carrey isn't the Baker. That would have been unwatchable.

Carrey hasn't been good in years, but his performance in ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND is nothing short of stunning. I think he'd have been ideally suited for the Baker, it'd have taken him work but Marshall could have gotten him there, IMO. Either way, can't complain about Corden, he's a fantastic choice.

This is my problem with people bemoaning Meryl's age. Julia McKenzie was a fabulous witch and this is what she looked like post transformation. She doesn't look young, but looks quite glamorous.
Remember how glamorous Miranda Priestly was in 'The Devil Wears Prada'.
The Witch will probably look very stunning post-transformation like in the second photo. The costume that Julia Mackenzie is wearing reminds me of the clothes Priestly in wearing the first photo.
beautywickedlover, don't you know that apparently any woman over 40 can't look glamorous or beautiful? No matter how much evidence there is to the contrary, why didn't they just cast Brooklyn Decker? She's beautiful, right?

Wel there's always similar comments when people suggest LuPone to play the role on stage. There usually tons of comments stating she's not young or beautiful enough. Where's the outrage then? Streep and LuPone are only two months apart in age.
Lupone would be FABULOUS as the witch! I would kill to hear her sing the Witch's Lament. UGH I would be a mess! Apparently she auditioned for the Original Production of INTO THE WOODS and wanted to play Cinderella but they wanted her as The Witch but she didn't want to play the Witch..
Ljay, LuPone was damn sexy in GYPSY, my problem with her in the role is she doesn't scream classy to me. LuPone seems much more of a Baker's Wife than a Witch to me, can you imagine her as the Baker's Wife with Bernadette as the Witch? Gay heaven.

See my problem is, if they didn't care about age, it should have gone to Bernadette. She is utter perfection in the role and she still has the voice for it. I personally think of the Witch on the younger side. I can see Meryl being good acting-wise but I would have strongly preferred Bernadette (personally I find her more attractive then Meryl).
