At the end of the day, this is very much an ensemble piece. Unless there's not much competition, I don't see many of the actors getting nominated. Meryl and Emily are the two likeliest, because they have the most to do in the script, just like in the show itself. The Baker's big dramatic moment, No More, has been cut from the film version, so it's doubtful he'll be able to snag a nomination.

I expect many for art direction/costume/makeup/visual fx/sound/etc. Plus, Sondheim's writing a new song for the film, so they'll get a nom for best original song. I just hope that, whatever he writes will be of some importance and not completely kill the pace like that song in the Les Mis movie.

Anyone who's familiar with contemporary film criticism and film blogs knows that Marshall has huge (and IMO largely unnecessary) backlash. Hell, if you've been reading the board for the past few years you'd be able to see how much vitriol he gets from some users around here. I think it largely stems from some revisionist history (the same critics who now profess CHICAGO is "fluff" sang it praises when it came out), and the fact that he hasn't delivered an all-around good film since he got his Oscar nomination. I mean, CHICAGO even had backlash at the time the Oscars came out, he really should have won Best Director. Oh well, I'd love to see him get back into form and prove critics wrong with this one; it actually might work out in his favor to be outside the Weinstein shadow, I still think Harvey was the reason why NINE was such a failure, the movie has some truly inspired moments but the entire enterprise reeks of producer's oversight.

I wonder what age they are going for in regards to Red Riding Hood. I assume if Jack is being played by a youngster so will 'Hood'. Maybe Lilla Crawford?

Well, if you believe an earlier post (which I don't, not even for a hot second), they are considering Sophia Grace from Ellen's show.

I wonder who this film will do against 'Night at the Museum 3' and 'Annie' since it opens on the same day as those two films. More people are familiar with 'Annie' than this show and the last two 'Night at the Museum' films have been successful. I do believe that this film's star power will help it and it would be wise for Disney to advertise the fairy tale characters often so it can appeal to families.

This far out, movies release dates are subject to change. With two high-profile family musicals both slated for Christmas Day, my money's on one of the studios balking and avoiding a head-to-head showdown.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

I think if it's a weak year, I could see Jake getting a nomination just based on name recognition. Also, I could see them move WOODS to late October or Thanskgiving.

I don't really see 14 as being a true youngster, I assume he has grown a bit since Les Miz began shooting. A 12 year old Red might work out with Huttlestone, but it depends on how they play off of each other.

Lilla is my top choice at the moment. She's insanely talented and it would make for such an amazing story to have her go straight from Broadway to Hollywwod.

I love the idea of Lilla and mentioned her earlier, but when is her contract up?

(Still hoping for an African American or Asian or Latina. This movie is too white right now.)

Hey, speaking of Latina ... if they were to cast Little Red with a Latina kid, they could cast Rita Moreno as Granny! That would be cool, too.

I love the idea of Rita as the granny, it would be great if they were to cast an unkwonwn Latina for Little red.

Although if they were going with Lilla, Bernadette would be perfection.

If Lilla gets it, I would love Bernadette to be Granny! She could easily do it (remember the older Marie in Sunday in the Park? That was nearly 30 years ago!) I'll bet Bernadette would have a lot of fun with it, too.

Into the Woods Movie Cast

This is my opinion, but if I think if the film were to be done right, it should have everyone sound like they have the same American accents, but maybe Jack and his mother have a slight British sound to theirs (because their fairy tale is only from Britain) and the rest slightly German sounds to theirs (because all the other fairy tales can be found in the Grimm’s German originals). And then the architecture and costumes would be mainly German influenced with some British influence, but just like everyone sounding like they have the same American accent, the look of everything would all have its own “far away land” style. And the time period would be around the 1700’s, because the Grimm’s published their book in the early 1800’s and they were supposed to be telling tales from long ago, but it can’t be too long because the music and dialogue of the musical doesn’t sound medieval or like the Renaissance.

I would also make all of the cast European looking (yes, that means white), because then they would all look like they came from the same European “far off kingdom” as the musical says. Having different races of people in the film would take me out of the believability that they all lived in the same long ago place. Unless someone can tell me that they did have different races in long ago Europe? And if so, which races?

Also, it would be good to make it seem like Rapunzel and the Baker are close to the same age, because the Baker “was no more than a babe” when his sister Rapunzel was born, and he can’t have been much older than 1 or 2 because he thinks his parents died in a baking accent. Hopefully the are able to make James Cordon and whoever plays Rapunzel look young enough.

And I have to say I, too, am upset at SPOILER Rapunzel not dying in the film. It takes away so much meaning from what the witch sings and does after that, and even takes away some of the film’s whole message (if you don’t teach children well, they can end up dying!). END SPOILER

By the way it would be bad if Disney made this film's fairy tale characters look like their animated versions, but if they did make this Cinderella look like the animated one, she shouldn’t have blonde hair and a blue dress, because in the film her hair was really strawberry blonde and her dress was silver. It’s only some of their marketing and merchandise imagery that make her look blonde and blue-dressed.

To make this film’s Cinderella’s dress proper, they should make it silver and gold or at least partly silver because she says to the magic tree “silver and gold throw down on me.” The slippers are always gold but there needs to be silver, too. That’s how both the Grimm’s version and the Perrault version describe the dresses, silver and gold, and Disney used the Perrault version for their silver dress.

Johnny Depp was asked about his role in the movie, calls it a "dream come true." (See it's a good thing, he's talking about the movie and Sondheim enthusiastically while promoting a big movie. Plus he'll be good!)

Richard Armitage would have been amazing.

Apparently, the Wolf's role is going to be slightly bigger. He starts off as man but then turns into a werewolf.

He'll be great! He can easily sing Hello, Little Girl.

But I like that he's "nervous" about it. That will keep him on his toes, fresh, and spontaneous. A lot of inventiveness can come out of nerves. But I have no doubt his Wolf will be one of the highlights of the film.

I do think this scene, in a major motion picture by Disney, is going to be a tad tricky. A lot of it will depend on who is cast as Little Red, her age, her development (emotionally and physically) and how the two actors play off of each other.

But obviously, this can run the gamut from playful and goofy to full-on sexual predator. I really don't think they have to go too far into the latter. The audience's (dirty little) minds will gladly complete the circle.

Still, I imagine they will film this scene and song a few times, several different ways, and find out just how far they could and should go with it before it becomes ... icky.

I don't think Depp will have any trouble with the role.

"That’s how both the Grimm’s version and the Perrault version describe the dresses, silver and gold, and Disney used the Perrault version for their silver dress."

But ever since the late 90's Disney has advertised her dress with a blue color. She's always seen in the parks with a blue dress as well. I think it's really more of a silver-blue color. The Platinum DVD and Blu-Ray Diamond Editions of the film also repainted her dress with a shade of blue during her scenes at the ball.

Into the Woods Movie Cast

Into the Woods Movie Cast

This is apparently the reason why Disney made her dress blue:

"One of my friends at Disney told me this one. This change occurred in the early 90's due to the artists who make the promotional posters, vhs covers, etc. They wanted to advertise Cinderella in her iconic ballgown surrounded by streams of sparkly magic (rather than rags)...however in the original silver color, the dress and sparkles blended into one another. So these artists added the darker blue tint to the dress in order to add contrast. It has remained so ever since."

http://www.fanpop.com/clubs/disney-princess/answers/show/19181/why-cinderellas-dress-always-portrayed-blue-when-white-movie

And because she has blonde hair and wears blue that is probably the main reason why Aurora, 'Sleeping Beauty', is always advertised with a pink dress so she she will not be confused for Cinderella. Aurora often wears pink in the American Disney parks though she is seen wearing blue at Disneyland Paris because people there don't confuse her for Cinderella.

ETA: Some fans were not happy with the Platinum DVD and Diamond Edition Blu-Ray.

Re: Little red, isn't a pre-pubescent girl too young for the sexual innuendo involved with the Wolf? I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with a 12 year-old. And I'm with the poster who opined that this cast is too white. Let's mix it up a little!
