Sorry, but audience awards mean absolutely nothing.
Exactly. Let's see if Burstein wins the Drama Desk. Though that might not even mean much. Look at Laura Benanti last year. She won the OCC and Drama Desk, but lost the Tony.
Burstein was robbed when he failed to win for "South Pacific". As much as I think Kazee deserves it, I wouldn't be upset if Danny took it home. Norm of the Gorgeous Voice is just not quite in the same acting league as these too.
This isn't the role for Jeremy Jordan to win and it's not his year. Jack Kelly isn't really a Tony winning role. Sure, it's a lot of fun and he has a few memorable moments but nothing that shows the brilliance I truly believe Jordan's capable of. He's an insanely talented young performer whose time will most certainly and deservedly come. Honestly, he's probably in fourth place after Burtstein, Kazee, and Lewis.
Burstein - I hope he wins. He deserves it and he delivered (and is currently delivering in L.A.) a showstopping, heartfelt performance in the role of an often overlooked character. He reinvented the wheel so to speak and is simply breathtaking to watch.
Kazee - Another great, semi-fresh talent who is in the show with the biggest buzz. He has a great chance and he's delivering an incredible performance in what I believe to be the most heartbreaking, beautiful male role of the season. He would be a good pick and I'd honestly be almost as happy if he won.
Lewis - Incredible role, beautiful voice. Probably 3rd place after the other two.
Overall, very great season for some beautiful male performances.

I haven't even seen P&B and I've said I found Maxwell a revelation in FOLLIES here in LA.
But it's hard for me to imagine that a woman widely considered our best African American musical actress will NOT win the Tony for playing what is widely considered the greatest musical theater role for an African American female.
(Please note: I wrote "widely", not "universally". There's no need for everyone to list their exceptions.)
^Not disputing what you're saying but I really hope that isn't the "reason" she gets votes or the win. It would be really upsetting if people talked about her potential win that way as well. She's an incredible actress in a beautiful role and should certainly be right up there if not winning (I'm still undecided.) Race shouldn't be and isn't a factor in how I felt about her or her performance.
Yes, Audra is African American and yes Bess is a huge African American role but the two don't automatically equal Tony award. The performer needs to be brilliant and Audra certainly is.

Thank you, broadwaydevil. Obviously, my post above is unclear and I appreciate you prompting me to clarify what I meant.
I am taking it for granted that Miss McDonald is great as Bess. I don't believe anyone here has said anything less of her. I should have noted that.
And I wasn't suggesting that McDonald will win because she is black, as in affirmative action. (No more than I would suggest her previous wins were based on racial preferences.)
I simply meant she is an iconic singer-actress in the most iconic musical role written for her "type". (And by all accounts she is stupendous.) I'll be very surprised if that is not rewarded by Tony voters.
By contrast, Maxwell is a brilliant actress in what is more or less an ensemble show, playing a part that has a few songs. In another year, maybe, but up against McDonald as Bess? I doubt it.
If McDonald does win, that will put her with Angela Lansbury and Julie Harris as a five time winner. Would history play a role in voters minds? Would voters want to bestow such on honor at such a young age?
Thank you for the clarification. From reading all of your tremendous insight here I genuinely didn't think that there were any racist connotations in anything you wrote but words can easily be misconstrued online so I was just clarifying for myself and anyone else who might read and speculate about the awards.

Actor will go to Burnstein or Kazee. I like Jeremy Jordan and all, but as someone else said, this is not the role/show that will bring him his first Tony.

Awards are great when they are handed out as an individual honor. I dislike competition, and therefore feel that everyone deserves an award just for their accomplishments in each role for each different show; each bring something to be grateful for, and to me just seeing their amazing performances is the award itself.
In a world filled with ridiculous ideas, that may have been the craziest I've heard of about the Tony Awards. Some have talked about scrapping them but I've never heard anyone suggest anything like what you're advocating for. This isn't usually my philosophy, but someone needs to win. Yes, we can all appreciate and thank performers, which we do by attending and being good audiences, but ultimately, there can only be one that is "the best." We may disagree with the outcome but that doesn't mean the award doesn't have merit. Tonys are a beautiful thing to mark an incredible accomplishment and it would be very unfortunate to tarnish that legacy by doling them out to everyone for "effort."

This isn't kindergarten where everyone gets an award no matter what.

I have to say that this whole Jan's bag thing really makes me laugh. I think Jan Maxwell is fab, and the visual of her sneaking around stealing Tonys and putting them into her giant bag cracks me up. Now I finally know where the Jan's bag thing started
I gotta say though, nothing in this world would make me happier than Jan winning the award, looking into the camera an saying "Now I have something to put in my bag".
