I do believe Rent will be the first to close out of those shows left from the mid 90's period.
Chicago isn't going anywhere. Still selling VERY strong, and great attendance. I think it's going to beat Rent, for sure.
Rent did 89.5% attendance last week...nothing to sneeze at.
And over 100% the week before, I think. A lot of this is probably riding on the movie, just like the Chicago film boosted the show's success. Being that it's relatively inexpensive to keep open, which has kept it going through some rough times, I don't think we'll be saying goodbye for AT LEAST another year, probably more.
I think the movie definetly helped for a while. But still the show was very popular before the movie. Chicago just has something Broadway audiences crave. And the stunt casting every so often still helps Chicago. Chicago is the Weissler's gem, I can't see them getting rid of it anytime soon.

I agree that it won't be going anywhere anytime soon but remember that the weeks surrounding the holidays are the busiest of the year on Broadway. It's doubtful that the movie has anything to do with it yet. This week all the college kids are back to school, so the next month or so it's likely to plummet again. Rent's attendance was not good last year. It hovered in the 50-60% for many weeks.
I certainly don't forsee it closing anytime soon, but as long as it doesn't clsoe before Tuesday I am a happy girl. But I still think RENT will be here for a while.
In the cosmic scheme of things, who cares ?
Rent did not do it for me

i'm sure it will hold out another year until the movie is released. then the movie will definitely give it another couple of years (ie. chicago), but after that, who knows? can the show continue to thrive on the people who keep going back dozens of times after the entire broadway community has grown tired of it?
in my personal experience, there have always been lines. the orchestra is always filled, and the mezz partially to 3/4 of the way filled. as long as they don't bring up some more HORRIBLE stunt casting, i believe rent still has some oomph left in it.
Mr. Roxy, in the cosmic scheme of things, you're correct. It doesn't matter. But then again, a dose of your own medicine: in the cosmic scheme of things, who should care that the show didn't "do it" for you? Some people do care; your posting that you don't like the show on nearly every RENT thread your fingers can get to is getting rather obnoxious.
*gets off proverbial soapbox*
ljay - I wasn't trying to knock Chicago in comparison to RENT; no need to defend it. I do like Chicago, and wish it well. All I was saying was that the movie made people who may not have been aware of it before aware, and more importantly, interested.
Everyone gives their opinion. We did not like it. If you & others liked RENT, more power to you. It is only an opinion when all is said & done
An opinion that's turned into the beating of a dead horse.
Say what you will - I'm not the one to flame you.
It is a dead issue as far as I am concerned. Case closed.

In the grand scheme of things, it is a big deal because many people love the play, enough to keep it alive for almost a decade. Many MANY people have claimed that rent has changed their lives- cliche as it sounds, I view it as a positive thing because it was the 'gateway drug' to many people's broadway addiction if you will, and what's better than that? (says the impoverished student who lives only for her next day off to somehow buy the next discounted or rush ticket for a show, any show will do...)
I have doubts that RENT will be closing any time soon. As many stated, its doing great right now finance wise and its still one of the most popular shows on Broadway. That plus the movie is going to start getting ALOT of hype soon and when it does people are going to be clambouring to see the stage production. I have a feeling RENT will be here for a long time.
But the "Footloose" movie didn't help the musical.
Okay, Mr. Tuttle, it worked. You did it. I think you've proved your point.
(just giggling as this thread unfolds)
Lael..this is not funny. I can't believe you're laughing!
Everyone seems to think that a movie keeps a show running. Well..what about "Footloose"? Or "The Full Monty"?
Obviously not.
*sticks tongue out*
Hey, RENT is my favorite show, but this thread is just funny.
I doubt it. Theres always a thread like this sayins Rents closing... but nothing happens. Rents a popular show- I don't think its leaving for a while.
Those movies were made BEFORE the musicals. The point there is that when a musical already exists and a movie is made, if the movie is a success, it's going to gain immediate attention that carries over to the show. If a movie already exists, in terms of the spread of mass media, that's not going to have the same impact. I thought *that* was obvious common sense, but I suppose not.

emcee, I think (and hope) that mr. tuttle was joking.
I know he was with his original post, but now I'm just confused. My guess is that he was joking, but I took the defensive just in case.
What happened to not bothering, emcee?
