I was at the invited dress tonight. I know it's usual etiquette not to speak on an invited dress but I left the theatre absolutely beaming. Granted, theatre was effectively existent for two years but even still, I cannot remember the last time I left a show feeling this buzzed. Though I'm not typically the biggest fan of jukebox musicals, this one is pretty special.
The entire cast is fantastic but lemme tell ya - Betsy fvking Wolfe. There was a moment during "That's The Way It Is" (her big number) that I caught myself thinking "holy **** I can't believe I'm actually hearing a voice like this in real life!!".
I am so excited for whatever the future has in store for this show and hope a Broadway run is officially announced soon!

If that's where it's going, I wouldn't haev picked that theatre. I'd think the Nederlander would be better."
With One More Time imminent for a Nederlander house given they're the producers, I highly doubt they would be offering up one of their other houses for such a direct competitive show. Could be wrong, but that doesn't seem like good business sense for either to me.
Just came from opening night here in Toronto and this show was a delight from start to finish! The crowd loved it, and the cast was energetic and in great voice. It was not only fun, but moved at a great pace, always keeping the momentum going. If it reminded me of any show it would be Mamma Mia. They respected these popular songs and their melodies while still fitting them into this new story.
After such a long lock down here it's the perfect reminder of how fun live theatre can be if we let it!! I love serious theatre as well, but my does it feels good to have a smile on your face for over two hours too!
Thanks Max Martin for letting all these great performers sing your crazy unforgettable songs for the musical theatre world.
I was also at the show tonight and I would describe it as utterly joyful. I don’t usually like jukebox musicals but this show is honestly what a jukebox musical can be at its very best. The song placements are half the fun - I loved listening to the audience gasp/chuckle as soon as they recognized the opening orchestrations. The placement of “Oops I Did It Again” is particularly delightful, as is the placement of “I Want It That Way.” I also loved “I Kissed A Girl” and “Everybody” and “Perfect.” I also love the lines written in rhyme. Paulo was hysterically funny as Lance; Melanie was perfect as Nurse; Justin was amazing as May; Betsy was her wonderful self and got extended applause after “That’s The Way It Is”; and Lorna can SING! She impressed me so much with both her vocal skill and her stage presence. She owned that stage the whole night. The ensemble also had incredible energy and their dancing was sharp and on point. This show is campy in the best way and hilarious and so much fun and I’m definitely going to come back a few more times while it’s here.
Sounds like absolutely nothing has changed since London. Sigh.
As it is, the show will probably get excoriated by most of the NY critics… we shall see if positive word of mouth for & Juliet starts spreading on Broadway as it still does in the West End.

Lots of people thought SIX would do poorly with NY critics (pre-pandemic when the transfer was first announced), but the critics loved it. I think &Juliet is playing very much to the same audience and using some of the same feel good female empowerment pop star formula (although a jukebox musical is obviously a different medium). I wouldn’t be surprised if the critics recognized this for what it is - not revolutionary or subversive, sure, but a VERY fun night at the theatre (especially for young women or girls).
This will be a big fat hit. It seems like just a fun night out. Go to happy hour before, see the show, have a blast. Seems like a show that is just positive and fun. But it also has production value. I can’t wait to see it! Love the recording.
This isn’t going the same route as A Strange Loop and I’m pretty sure everyone involved knows this.

The New York Times states the show was "panned by critics" in London, as it "received reviews that were mostly lukewarm at best."
Despite this, it sounds like a loud, colorful blast. Let's see how audiences react when this hits NY.
& Juliet got mixed reviews in London, but I still feel like they were better than many expected - many hit jukebox musicals fared far worse with the critics (Most notably We Will Rock You). Plus the three Olivier Awards for acting tell their own story. & Juliet will certainly be an outsider in the Tony Awards race, but it could get a lot of nominations if the producers and creative team play their cards right...

This absolutely infuriates me because &Juliet wasn’t panned by critics at all and generally got good reviews! It also won 3 performance Olivier Awards. The NY Times should do better.
The Independent - 4 stars; The Guardian (Gregory Robinson) - 4 stars; Evening Standard - 4 stars; London Box Office - 4 stars; Time Out - 4 stars; WhatsOnStage - 5 stars; The Stage - 5 stars
^ How are those “mostly lukewarm at best”? *rollseyes*
I hope this show does well because it was such a fun night out when I went, and I also think it’s the type of show Broadway needs right now. Yes it’s silly but it doesn’t try to be anything it’s not, and it does what it’s trying to do well - it has catchy tunes, and it’s a modernised take on Romeo & Juliet without being pretentious about it.
