Jamie Lloyd’s EVITA on Broadway

Does everyone agree that the Tony wins for Sunset Blvd. make it more likely that EVITA transfers to Broadway!

The Tony wins are meaningless as far as EVITA's trajectory is concerned. If ALW and Lloyd want this production of EVITA on Broadway, it will transfer. I would be surprised if it doesn't, but...who knows.

I hope it does. I love the songs from EVITA and Jamie could do some interesting things with it.

To be honest the entire show could be done outside while the audience watches from a screen inside and I'd still hope it transfers. I'm just so thrilled to have an Eva who I know can handle the score (and well!)

What's next for Broadway depends on the economy.  A revival certainly is a better bet than a new show.  That's why Mama Mia is coming back.  If things get bad I'd expect to see things like Grease, or even some kind of remix of Cats.

Cats already is coming back with The Jellicle Ball. Just not formally announced.

Edit: but seriously if Cats is part of the 26/27 season, Evita likely won't be until 27/28.

It’s a tough score. I’m hoping Zegler will be able to handle 7 or 8 shows a week. Not sure what her schedule is going to be for the London run.

Is CATS no longer being eyed for the 2025-2026 season? Meaning EVITA could theoretically open in 26-27? Either way, it seems wise to assume he will not open two of his shows in the same season (despite that happening in 2012 and 2017). EVITA could have the same schedule as SUNSET (start in Fall 2026, continue on through Summer 2027 or beyond).

There's also a chance he could do a Best Revival hat trick.

According to this headline, his new musical with Lloyd & Harrison THE ILLUSIONIST is aiming for a Fall 2026 opening in London.

Seeing the footage of her on the actual balcony singing "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" - I wonder how that would work on Broadway. I can't think of any theater where that would work except maybe the Lunt? I think those windows open up.

Online rumors have been the Walter Kerr but Hadestown has survived several supposed closings so far. I like Evita but would prefer Hades stay. 

Music Box has the balcony but obscured. St James ?

The Kerr feels small for such a large ensemble show. But then, I guess HADESTOWN is pretty close to that with all the musicians onstage too.

The Majestic has balconies, right - or am I mis-remembering? (A very large theatre though..)

Don't the August Wilson and Hirschfield have balconies? Albeit maybe multiple small ones?

I THINK the following large houses all have a balcony outside where they could conceivably do the filmed sequence:

• Majestic
• Lunt
• August Wilson
• Nederlander
• St. James balcony has a metal "cage" of sorts around it
• Hirschfeld has a fire escape in front + stairs (where I often see actors hanging out), does that count?
• plus some playhouses like the Music Box and Kerr.

None of the balconies are even half as attractive as the Palladium, but that's a unicorn of a theatre.

If he has loyalty to ATG (for contractual or other reasons), that limits them to the Wilson, St. James, or Hirschfeld.

August Wilson timing would make sense for a Spring opening after Cabaret ostensibly closes at the end of the year after one more round of casting to close it out. That is, if it can make it to Labor Day.

Interested to see how, after the triumph of Sunset, Lloyd's schtick (I say fondly, I'm a fan) is received. How novel does the filming feel now that it's been done? 

His Much Ado is also likely coming this season too, but that would make sense to come in in the Fall.

There have been shows that incorporated live filming yes, but (from the ones I've seen), no one has done it as well-integrated and as cohesively as Jamie Lloyd for Sunset, and I can't help thinking he's peaked with this specific style/aesthetic.  I'm sure he'll have a "take" on Evita, but it feels hard to justify as much extensive camera work for Evita (though I'm sure there will be something that comments on the masses and how media can spread virally) when it almost feels surprising that it hadn't been done for Sunset before given that it's ABOUT movies.

I think Network was probably the one that came the closest to making the cameras feel integral to the direction, but I still think it came off as a bit more of a gimmick.  But I'm an unabashed Sunset fan so I'm sure there will be people that disagree.

And would you mind letting me know what those "countless times" filming outside of the theater and simultaneously broadcasting into the theater were, exactly? Let's just stick to the West End or Broadway, specifically. Don't want to be overwhelmed by the list!

To me, the heavy use of filming worked wonders in Sunset due to the story. It's about motion pictures. I'm not sure how that's going to translate to something like Evita? To me, in Sunset, it doesn't feel like a gimmick. It totally makes sense. But I'm not sure about Evita.

We still don’t definitively know what the staging will be. We know they filmed Rachel singing on the theater balcony, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s how the show will be staged.

We’ve seen clips of Rachel singing on the balcony both in costume and in a robe. I think it’s pretty safe to say they’ll be using a live camera feed of at least “DCFMA”.

And Jamie Lloyd is hardly the first director to integrate live camera work in his shows. Just of things I’ve seen personally, Ivo van Hove used the “actor wanders around outside the theater followed by a camera” gimmick in The Damned, which ran at the Park Avenue Armory a few years ago. Not to mention his extensive use of it in the backstage areas in West Side Story. Europeans love their cameras in theatre.

I wouldn't mind if they start 'don't cry for me argentina' outside when it's slow, but hopefully they have her return to the stage somehow during the song they can't have her belt the entire song outside it wouldn't make sense to the paying audience! I have a funny feeling they wouldn't do this. I'll be at the first preview so I'll let you know!
