I wouldn't mind if they start 'don't cry for me argentina' outside when it's slow, but hopefully they have her return to the stage somehow during the song they can't have her belt the entire song outside it wouldn't make sense to the paying audience! I have a funny feeling they wouldn't do this. I'll be at the first preview so I'll let you know!

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Depending on how EVITA is recieved here in London, I could see this fast-tracked to Broadway to make it in the 25/26 season. The reason I say that is because rumor has it that Lloyd's Much Ado will be transferring (again, don't know if it's happening or not). If that's the case, then the West End and Broadway productions would be competing in the awards season on both sides of the Atlantic. Seems Jamie Lloyd is trying to dominate both the New York and London theatre seasons at the same time.

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

Just of things I’ve seen personally, Ivo van Hove used the “actor wanders around outside the theater followed by a camera” gimmick in The Damned, which ran at the Park Avenue Armory a few years ago. Not to mention his extensive use of it in the backstage areas in West Side Story. Europeans love their cameras in theatre."

American Idiot also had some live camera work in a few scenes.

Ivo also used cameras outside the theater in “Network”. Crazy to me how Jamie is credited as such a visionary for it when he lifted it from Ivo.

It's old hat to describe such techniques as a gimmick, as if a tap number isn't also a standard technique repeated again and again. Just like actor-musician work Doyle used to do caused outcry, even though it's as old as theatre itself. Well, live capture has been around for as long as it's been technically possible.

Also, I think it's fun how in this moment of EVITA, Eva is not schmoozing the elites inside the Casa Rosada, but out talking to the working class masses. And that's a lovely bit of symmetry to have her our singing the title number to the crowds outside, not the paying audience.

Is this Evita being done ala Sunset style? As the choreography looks very familiar and no set-just bleachers?

What about the costumes?

Just a reminder that the original Hal Prince production of EVITA utilized video extensively - albeit in the form of historic news clips. The entire original production was almost wall to wall with it.

ALW didn’t want CATS & SUNSET in the same season, so I imagine EVITA wouldn’t transfer until Fall 2026.

Saw Sunset Tuesday night and noticed construction/restoration work happening on the balcony. It definitely needs the repair work that's happening.

I suppose if Ivo's iterations of the method had been seen as successful as Lloyd's implementation, he wouldn't be getting said credit.

Reminder that people hated it in WSS.

Ivo also went outside the theater with ITA.

The Kings of War re-staging in 2021 at least, not sure if the original runs had it.

I actually just now heard that EVITA is aiming for a spring 2026 run at the Majestic, and considering that that theater has a  very extensive outer balcony, it definitely makes sense...

That's a looooooottttt of seats. But maybe Rachel's star power combined with the show title make for a bigger event than Gypsy which has struggled many weeks? Idk...

If the show is well received in London + Zegler + the title itself, it can work.

And excluding the music, it was very similar to what Lloyd ended up doing with Sunset IIRC. Scene started outside the theater and filmed them as they entered the theater until they ended up on stage.

I’m glad we’re already at rumors of a second theater a year away. Will there be a proshot?

This is what it looked like when Jamie Lloyd did Evita at Regents Park. From what I can see some of the bare bones e.g. set stairs are the same, but clearly they are going for some enhancements

I would not say it was as magical as Sunset but I'm very curious to see what he does with it now after Sunset

For what it’s worth, I enjoyed the Regent’s Park “Evita” more than I ever did “Sunset” (as a whole) so I’m curious what he’s going to do to “Sunset-it-up” next week.

So, ALW is going to fire Ziegler and put Scherzinger in this if it goes to Broadway, right?
