acrocksyo, self loathing is quite common in the GLBT community. You cannot help your homophobia. You grew up NOT seeing gays display affection in public or magazines or TV or movies. You say being gay should not matter? To who? As a young gay man, I would have loved to grow up knowing that their were plenty of role models for me. I would have loved to grow up seeing my experience on a TV show or in a movie.
Unfortunately I didn't and neither did you. We grew up with the exact opposite. All the while getting subtle and not so subtle messages that what we are is wrong.
It matters that people come out. It matters more than you know.

So easy to be brave when you aren't of note in the first place...
It's people like Mister Russell with their snide, catty, nasty remarks that make it truly unpleasant to visit these boards. Of course it's so easy to behave like an a------ when you hide behind the anonymity of a screen name.

Could you be any more rude? I applaud John on what he has done. I have loved him as an actor/insane person long before he came out, and will continue to do so now.
I can't even begin to fathom the courage coming out takes, but to see people shoot down others for it is absolutely disgusting. I would think that most of the people on this site would support that.
it is extremely brave of john. his career is just beginning on a mainstream level. he doesn't have an established career to counter negativity.
Probably shouldn't add fuel to the fire here but I can't help it.
Whether you are "of note" or not, anytime ANY one comes out it's an act of bravery.
Off my soapbox now.

I had noticed the articles Wayman is referring to several months ago in reFRESH magazine, and I totallly forgot to mention it here, because in the one I did read, I think it was his first, it never mentions his sexuality at all. Although I think it did mention never being to go on in OZ and kiss Hugh...
Congrats to John.
john is a great person , good for him

Yes as you get older you'll realize that what John Hill did is a brave step forward for gay rights. It really is going to take many of the same types of acts by courageous notable people to help make inroads on the mass hysteria of hatred and bigotry in this country. Bravo to John Hill.
I can only imagine the response when Neil Patrick Harris because mainstreamly open. Just two weeks or so ago, TV magazine had him paired with Kristin Chenoweth as the best couple. He has a lot of fans and I think that will also help rights.
i knew it....
well anywho I think he is such a cooky guy but very loveable
I am very happy he is having fun doing what he does best and being open about everything
